U.S. Probes Death of Boko Haram Leader, Shekau

The United States Government has launched a probe into the report that Boko Haram leader, Abubakar Shekau, is dead in a bid to authenticate the claim by the Joint Task Force (JTF), which had on Monday announced his possible death following gunshot injuries he sustained in a clash with Nigerian troops. The announcement that “Shekau might have died between July 25 to 3 August” in Amitchide, Cameroun, after being “mortally wounded” in an encounter with JTF at the Sambisa Forest on June 30, has been greeted with disbelief as the task force did not produce any proof beyond relying on…

Need for Public Conveniences

It is common everyday and everywhere to hear and read such expressions as: “Health is wealth”, “healthy mind only found in healthy body”, “clean surroundings enhance good health” and “cleanliness is next to Godliness”. There is practically nobody who does not believe these maxims to be true.  Governments at all levels chorus them in the mass media too.  That is why inscriptions and warnings are found in public places that read: “Don’t urinate here”, “Don’t defecate there” or “drop your refuse in the bins provided”. It is commendable that individuals and corporate bodies detest their premises being littered with wastes…

Emptying the Sea

Once two partridges, a husband and wife, were going on a trip. Before they left, the wife laid some eggs near the ocean. Then the husband said to the sea, “We are going on a sea voyage. You must take care of these eggs for us. if we don’t find the eggs when we return, we’ll empty you.” The sea agreed to take care of the eggs, and it kept them safe. A few days later the two partridges came back, but they couldn’t find the eggs. They screamed at the sea. The sea wanted to give them the eggs,…

THE TEN ‘I’s THAT BREAK THE HOME (7)

As October 1 draws near

CAUSES OF INSINCERITY IN MARRIAGE Many couples today have different reasons why they tell lies to each other. Some may see these reasons as justifiable while others do it merely to play smart. In the words of Thomas Pazhayampallil, “Modern society presents special challenges to the young. At every turn they are enticed by a concept of human freedom that is really slavery, by a relativism that robs them of the truth, and by a materialism and pragmatism that can rob them of their very souls” (Pazhayampallil, T., Words of Eternal Life, vol.1, p. 1003). Our concern here is primarily…

The proliferation of political parties in Nigeria and its Destructive consequences

It should be clear to all “ENLIGHTENED AND PROGRESSIVE NIGERIANS” that the “MULTIPLICITY OF POLITICAL PARTIES” in our country should not be the way forward for a “PALPABLE DEMOCRACY” to really function in Nigeria. THE STUMBLING BLOCK: The Myriads of ethnic or regional oriented political parties (“Mushroom-Parties”) in Nigeria are to a large extent, making the “Dividends of Democracy illusive and Un-realizable” in our country. A large majority of these political parties, described in some quarters and countries as “Titeres” or “Puppet Parties”, do purport or pretend to challenge the “Dominant Party in Power but the real fact is that…

Same-sex Marriage As A Philosophy of Humanism (2)

THE IMPLICATIONS OF HUMANIST MANIFESTO For those who deny the existence of God, the Humanist Manifesto represents the best of human thought today.  We have to note, too,  that Manifesto has within it the origins of most contemporary movements, philosophies as well as theologies. The influence of humanism has been patently pervasive. The humanists have formed modern society. They cloak evil in the nebulous garb of scholarly discourse and good intentions. When they say that their Manifesto “transcends the narrow allegiances of church, state, party, class or race” they tend to parody the Pauline message to the Galatians: “For it…

A Narrow Gate In Order To Enter The Kingdom

When someone truly loves us and calls us by name, we discover ourselves and we are no longer alone.  Victory over solitude generates joy: therefore, to live is a feast.  The Kingdom of God is communion, because of this its advent inaugurates a time of joy.  It is a feast without decline because it is definitive.  It is a feast to which all men are invited.   KINGDOM OF GOD, A FEAST TO WHICH ALL ARE INVITED The truth of communion wants us gathered together around a table, in the cheerfulness of a meal, in the abundance of a banquet. …

NULGE Strikes: Arising Issues Of Corruption And Constitutionalism

Recently, the National Union of Local Government Employees  (NULGE) representing the 774 Local government Areas in the country went on preemptive strike actions to protest the reluctance of the senate to agree to the constitutional amendment that will facilitate the end to the inconvenient marriage of local governments with their state governments Co joined by joint accounts in the receipt of federal allocations. The House of Representatives had earlier given the nod for the fiscal divorce but an obstinate and insensitive senate refused the amendment, perhaps for reasons that have not been made public. This development is coming in the…

Free Education is not free Certificate!!!

Whether teachers are born or made depends on which teacher you meet. But Sir Andrew Ajaero is every inch a teacher only he’s from the old school. Mbaise-born and a principal for 20 years, Sir Andrew would not negotiate discipline with any school board neither would he spare the rod and spoil the child. Any offence will get the desired punishment – flogging included. But the veteran educator knows times have changed. Having gone to school before the war and started teaching after, he knows that tremendous changes have occurred both in and out of the classroom.  The man who…
