Making Fitness and Nutrition Goals for Success

Do you make goals? Do you set a time frame in which to achieve your goals? How do you gauge the success of you achieving your goals? What do you do if you do not achieve your goals?


Most people set goals for themselves to achieve in some shape or form. Some would be considered short term goals, like ensuring you stay sufficiently hydrated for the day. Others are long term goals like losing a certain amount of weight.


The key to setting goals for success is ensuring that they are SMART goals, specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and timely.


Let’s break this down be using an example of someone that wants to lose weight.


What is it that you want to achieve?


Remember be very specific. An example is I want to lose 10 lbs.


How would you measure this?


By weighing start weight and logging it.


Is this achievable?

That would depend on the timeframe in which you wanted to lose 10 lbs, the recommended amount of weight loss to safely aim for is 1 – 2 lbs a week. So  yes 10lbs could potentially be lost in 10 weeks but it could take longer.


Is it realistic?

Again you need to look at the timeframe but also develop an action plan on how you will achieve your goal. For weight loss this would incorporate healthy eating and regular exercise, so you would need to then set goals around these areas working with your schedule. Not forgetting to take into account any obstacles and how you could combat them.


Is it timely?

When you set your goals, you need to have a time in which you want to achieve your goal by. So using the example, ‘I want to lose 10lbs in 5 weeks’.


By taking the time to sit down and really think about your goals, planning them, noting down obstacles and how you’ll overcome them. You are on your way to setting successful goals.
