Dear Mother, I have decided to talk to you, to let you know my feelings.  I want to know why you did this to me.  I have stayed inside of you for only three months.  I was very comfortable and warm.  I felt really protected.  I know that you are a very special person because I ate the food you ate and the water you drank.  I longed for the day I would see your face.  Nine months was a long time to wait, but I was determined to wait, I had to be patient.   One day, I heard you…

It is mentioned by the great North African bishop, St. Cyprian of Carthage, who died in 258, and by the Syrian deacon, St. Ephraim (306-373), who even goes so far as to say that the main reason why God gave people hands was so that they could receive Holy Communion. This custom is still found in some places among Anglicans. It was only during…

Benefiting from Government Projects by Default

Nigeria’s under-developed or rather total lack of basic infrastructure has made its citizens so vulnerable to the empty promises of politicians. Often a promise of better roads, provision of water, better medical facilities etc are used apparently as a blackmail by politicians. They understand quite well how and why people are so desperate to have these basic infrastructures otherwise taken for granted in some developing countries. Needless to say, the politicians come and go, leaving the problem unsolved. Imolites, as the rest of Nigerians, struggle with the poor infrastructural development and try to provide for themselves as best they can….

The Contemporary Nigerian Poet: Still Speaking To The Deaf And Dumb? (2)

The worst aspect of the poet’s life is his powerlessness over the transcendental powers that urge him to speak, to write and to rebel against societal evil. The Prophet Jeremiah caught this picture well when he accused God of having seduced him and regretted having let himself be seduced. He had became a laughing stock and everybody’s butt because of the violence and ruin he utters as compelled by the controlling power – yet each time he gathers himself  to forbid such testimony, there seemed ”to be a fire burning in my heart, imprisoned in my bones ”(cf: Jeremiah 20:7-9)….

WORDS ARE NOT ENOUGH

A few years before the Emancipation Proclamation, this man had an agreement with his master to buy his freedom by paying a certain amount yearly, in exchange for going wherever he pleased to work and raise the money. Realizing he had better prospects in Ohio, the slave-man went there to work. At the time the Emancipation happened he still owed his master some three hundred…
