Pope appoints Bishop for Uromi Diocese

His Holiness Pope Francis on Thursday 6th November, 2014, appointed Msgr Donatus Ogun as Bishop of Uromi.

Born October 12, 1966 at Sapele, Delta State, he hails from Eguare-Ewohimi, Ishan, Esa South-East Local Government in the Diocese of Uromi. He is at present President of the Augustinian Institute, Makurdi.

He did his primary education at Sapele, and Benin City. He completed his religious formation at the Augustinian Novitiate, Jos Plateau State and made his final profession on 28th August 1992; He studied Philosophy and Theology at St Augustine Major Seminary, Jos (1986-88, 1989-93). He was ordained a priest on 31st July 1993. He did his studies at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome and obtained a Doctorate in Canon Law (1996-2001).

A Press Release signed by Rev. Fr Dr. Ralph Madu, Secretary General, Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria said the date of his Episcopal ordination will be communicated in due course.

It should be recalled that Uromi Diocese was created on December 14, 2005 from the Archdiocese of Benin. Its first bishop was Augustine Obiora Akubueze, who was named Archbishop of Benin in March 2011. Since then, Very Rev. Fr. John Akhidue has been acting as Administrator. The diocese has a total population of 780,000, of which 102,045 are Catholics. It has 23 parishes as at 2012.
