The Purpose of Politics And The 2015 Elections (2)

The Emergence and Proscription of the Indigenous People of Biafra

Hobbes, describing man’s existence in the state of nature as “solitary, poor, nasty, brutish and short” makes abundantly clear his conception of the purpose of politics: to help man escape his barbaric natural state and enjoy the benefit of civilized society (Hobbes 70). According to Hobbes, man’s natural state is a state of war, and in this state, “the notions of Right and Wrong, Justice and Injustice have there no place” (Hobbes 71). Hobbes notes that “where there is no common power, there is no law; where no Law; no injustice” (Hobbes 71). In a civilized society, these concepts exist,…

The Jews saw Jesus Christ as breaking their religious laws and decided to call him to order by making him pay the supreme price. When Jesus foresaw what was about to happen to him, he directed his disciples to braze up for a showdown by getting ready with their swords. Those who had none were instructed…

SECURITY IN THE CHURCH AND SOCIETY

PREAMBLE …Security Is mortal’s chiefest enemy – Shakespeare’s MACBETH The issue of security is so elastic that it can be stretched to infinity. It encompasses all aspects of man’s existence even to the eschatological dimension. But for the purpose of this essay, we shall confine ourselves to the need for the Church and society to be vigilant at all times for being vigilant is in tandem with the maxim that the price of liberty is eternal vigilance. The definition of the word, “security” by Wikipedia tends to align with our opening sentence. It says that “security is the degree of resistance to,…

Youth restiveness in Nigeria: A latent volcano (2)

An empowered graduate youths can be a disseminator of learned skills and is more amenable to novel ideas while the clerically minded should be given administrative assignments through competitive honest evaluation devoid of discrimination on the basis of quota. Financial empowerment should not end in rhetorics.  The most effective means of alleviating poverty and its concomitant non-conformist behavior is by creating jobs.  Alternative sources of survival negative or positive come up depending on what measures the governments adopt to ameliorate the situation of unemployment which has made the youths subservient to the whims and caprice of the powerful and wealthy…

Marketers New Pump Price

It is not a secret that many Nigerians live in abject poverty and subsist on less than the UN approved one US dollar ($1) per day. Therefore, any effort made to ease the suffering of the people, whatever the motive, cannot be rebuffed or dismissed as insignificant. This is the reason why the recent cut in the price of petrol by the Federal Government, however small, is a welcome gesture, even if, as some have argued, the purpose is purely political.  But then, the masses are still awaiting the benefit of the price change, as several petrol stations are still…

THE ULTIMATE CHALLENGE

Pastors corner with Fr Henry Ibe

Every great leader or visionary makes use of slogans to great effect. Usually concise, direct and poignant, such slogans go straight to the heart of the matter. They encapsulate the whole message and characterize the entirety of the speaker or writer’s persona or legacy. We see this a lot in politics and in movies. When, for example, we hear the expression: “I have a dream”, we think of Martin Luther King Jnr. Similarly, the phrase: “I’ll be back”, usually reminds movie lovers of Arnold Schwarzenegger. In today’s Gospel we hear the greatest slogan ever deployed, the greatest challenge ever given…
