Eight couples were on Saturday 2 July, 2016, joined in Holy Matrimony at St. Mark’s Catholic Parish New Owerri.
The wedding attracted many parishioners, family members, friends and well-wishers of the couples.
The Mass was presided over by the Assistant Parish Priest, Rev. Fr. Paschal Onyeneke, assisted by the Parish Priest, Rev. Fr. Dr. Jude Onyeakazi and Resident Priest, Monsignor Marcilinus Ibe.
Delivering the homily, Fr. Jude noted that the mass wedding was organized in response to the universal call of the Holy Father Pope Francis to Catholics worldwide in respect of the Jubilee Year of Mercy. According to the Priest, God is mercy and it is God’s wish that all of us should come back into one fold in Him. “That is why today this parish in a very strong way tries to reach out to our brothers and sisters who have not in one way or another “regularized” their marriage, to help them to do so”.
Continuing, the priest stated that it is a thing of joy that the couples have answered this call to receive Christ in their marriage, adding that “this is the strongest pastoral statement that the parish is making this year.
Fr. Jude sadly observed that many young people today though wedded but are living in sin and it is our duty to help them out of love to rediscover Christ.
“Christians need to understand that the message of marriage is not to say that you wedded in a glamorous way, you had your reception at a five star hotel rather  the essence is that you have decided to accept Christ and also accept one another”.
He urged the couples to live out what they heard in the readings of the day as according to him, marriage is not only about the wedding day but a life contract.
He congratulated the couples and everyone who in one way or the other helped to prepare the couples for marriage.
Earlier, the chief celebrant, Rev. Fr. Paschal welcomed everybody to the occasion while noting that it was a special day for the couples. He prayed that their union will be a successful one, founded in faith and spirituality,
In his remarks later, the Parish Priest thanked God for the nice weather and thanked the Parish Pastoral Council for setting up a wonderful committee that saw to the success of the wedding. He also praised the CWO Choir for their special performance.
At the reception of the couples, the Chairman Parish Pastoral Council, Engr. Stanley Anyanwu noted that the occasion was a historic one and advised the couples to keep to their wedding vows. He also called on them to register without delay in the CMO and the CWO.
The highlights of the occasion include, cutting of cake, feeding each other and dancing.
