I’ll make Owerri look like Dubai – Okorocha

“See Paris and die”, is a very old saying, especially by the French, who believe, though arrogantly, that the beauty and charm of their capital city-Paris is so spectacular that if one dies after seeing Paris, one will have no regret, since he would have seen the best sights available in the world.

This is the kind of dream, Imo State Governor, Owelle Rochas Okorocha has for Owerri, capital of Imo State. The governor strongly believes and he says so often, that by the time he leaves office, Owerri will look like Dubai, a spectacular city of glitz and glamour; a playground for the rich and famous, a tourist hotspot.

Speaking during an interactive session with journalists at the NUJ Press Centre Owerri April 10, Governor Okorocha reiterated his urban renewal programme, saying he is in a hurry to transform Imo State to a tourism hub, investors haven and a modern city that could compete with some renowned cities like Dubai and Taiwan. The widening of existing roads, opening of various inland roads in the capital city, provision of waterfalls, street lights and other beautification programmes going on, are all part of the programme to make Owerri attractive to both investors and tourists.

In the envisaged Owerri new look, keke (commercial tricycles) will not be allowed as new Passat taxis befitting a megacity will replace them. Already over 5000 passat cars have been imported to replace the keke, which will now operate outside Owerri Municipal.

Also, the Ekeukwu Owerri market and all markets and trading points along Douglas road including Ama-Hausa will relocate elsewhere.

He insisted that the entire landscape of Owerri must be changed for good, adding that his road expansion project will soon move to Douglas Road, in line with his urban renewal programme.

To ensure that Owerri actually looks like Dubai, Governor Okorocha warned shop owners to desist from open display of wares and goods, advising them to display their wares in glass showcases inside their shops.

The Governor who spoke on a wide range of issues, including the local government election coming up in September, Imo Cargo Airport, IMSU Campus at Onuimo, said he was disappointed by the call in certain quarters for him to give account of his stewardship. He said that those asking him to give account of how he spent the monies accruing to the state, forgot that Imo people are owing him the sum of 18billion Naira, being security vote the state is owing him,. He explained that he forfeits his N4bn security vote annually.

The governor assured Imolites that he will complete all on-going projects in Imo State before leaving office in 2019.

Make Owerri “another” dubai? Is it with mosques, islamic centers and sharia? We Reject the islamization of Imo state. We do need any dubai in Igboland.
