Archbishop Obinna Inaugurates Assumpta Parish Council

The Most Rev. Anthony Obinna, Catholic Archbishop of Owerri and Parish Priest Maria Assumpta Cathedral Owerri on Sunday, Feb. 24, inaugurated the Parish Pastoral Council.

Speaking during the inauguration, Archbishop Obinna said because of the four-year tenure regime the new Parish Council will be the last he will appoint before his retirement. Catholic Bishops are expected to retire at the age of 75. Archbishop Obinna will be 72 this year.

He therefore charged the councilors to show commitment in their various posts and co-operate with the Administrator who represents him in the Pastoral administration of the parish.

Turning to the parishioners, he appealed to them to cooperate with the new councilors and the administrator.
He commended the past administration headed by Rev. Fr. Gerard Onyekwere (Administrator) and Chief Sylvester Obasi (Chairman Parish Council) for the good work they did.

In his remarks, the new Administrator Rev. Fr. Nick Ijemaru sued for team work among the various councils (Parish and Stations). He said such co-operation and peaceful disposition would enable the Archbishop to concentrate in the administration of the Archdiocese instead of being distracted by issues in the parish.

Responding on behalf of the expanded parish council, the new chairman, Mr. Emmanuel Uzoka pledged unalloyed loyalty for the parish priest and the administrator. He however solicited the prayers of all to enable the new administration realize its objectives.

The expanded parish council comprises Archbishop A.J.V. Obinna – Parish Priest, Rev. Fr. Nicholas Ijemaru – Administrator, Mr. Emma Uzoka – Chairman Parish Pastoral Council, Mr. Andrew Opara – Vice Chairman, Lady Emmanuela Chukwuezi – Secretary, Enyinnaya Uboh – Assistant Secretary, Emeka Ani PRO, Collins Amadi – Provost, Engr. Barth Onyekwere – Chairman Finance Council, Arc Emeka Ozoude – President CMO, Mrs. Chinelo Ezeani – President CWO, Chukwuemeka Emmanuel – President CYON, Lilian Maduako – President Mary League. Also inaugurated are members of the four station councils and exco of sodalities.
