All roads led to the Nigeria Union of Pensioners Office in Owerri Imo State March 5, 2018, as Prof Protus Nathan Uzoma celebrated his birthday with Imo senior citizens.

It was a gathering of who is who in the society including governorship aspirants, priests, academics, traditional rulers, nollywood stars and the pensioners.

Rev Fr. Prof John Obilor of the Imo State University Owerri, who stood in for the chairman of the occasion Prof Aloysius U. Awuzie thanked God for the lives of all present especially that of the celebrant Prof Uzorma. He prayed God to grant him many more years ahead.

Fr. Obilor decried the present condition of pensioners in Imo State. “Today when you mention the word pensioners, people envision old men and women collapsing everywhere and begging for what is rightfully theirs. So, from today onwards, I will call you senior citizens and no more pensioners, because I believe you have contributed your quota to the growth of the state.” The senior citizens welfare should be a priority in the state, he concluded.

The celebrant, Prof Protus Uzorma said he is always bittered by what the senior citizens go through in the state, adding that he was celebrating with them not because he is rich but because of his love for them.

“I pray to grow like you, but the problem is that this government, that I describe as a beautiful egg with a rotten yoke, has made growing old look like a curse instead of a blessing.” He therefore enjoined the rich to help the senior citizens to make ends meet.

Prof Protus Uzoma used the occasion to bring goodnews to the senior citizens by informing them he has opened a welfare account on their behalf and he is partnering with hospitals which will care for the sick among them using funds generated from the account.

He explained that he is not a signatory to the account. Rather it is managed by the Secretary of NUP (Nigerian Union of Pensioners) Imo State and a Catholic priest. He made a donation of N500,000 to the account and invited his friends and guests to help secure a better tomorrow for our senior citizens. He equally gave out gifts to some senior citizens.

It is also worthy to note that last year, Prof Uzorma celebrated his birthday with the inmates of Nigeria Prisons Owerri where he helped secure freedom for 15 inmates with bailable offences with the aid of the Commissioner of police and an NGO.

Chief Okey Eze, Imo State Governorship aspirant thanked the celebrant for his magnanimity. He supported the project with the sum of 250,000 Naira.

Chief Frank Nneji, another governorship aspirant announced a support of 50,000 naira monthly for 10 months to help cater the needs of the pensioners.

Others at the function included Prof Jude Njoku, Chief Ikedi Ohakim who was represented by Barr Austin Otuokere, among others.

Award was given to Prof Protus Nathan Uzorma by the National Association of Imo State Students.
Imo NUP Secretary, Livinus Ashiegbu on behalf of Imo pensioners thanked Prof Uzorma for his kind gesture and prayed God to bless him.
