… Condemns attack on Ohanaeze Ndigbo leader

The United Progressive Party (UPP) has condemned in very strong terms, the recent statement endorsing President Muhammadu Buhari for second term, by traditional rulers of Okigwe Zone.

The party reminded such natural rulers and custodians of the people’s culture, norms and tradition, that they are expected to be neutral in politics.

UPP’s great concern and embarrassment over the purported endorsement of Muhammadu Buhari for a second term by Okigwe Traditional rulers were contained in a release signed by the Deputy National Chairman of the party, Chief Chris Ejike Uche (Dimkpasaa). “We are pained that the Traditional Rulers in Okigwe Zone have demonstrated that they have become political jonny men in the hands of persons with inordinate ambitions”, he stated.

He averred that by so doing the Okigwe zone traditional rulers have exceeded their authority by dabbling into a matter that is not part of their mandate. He therefore warned those involved to retrace their steps, since the said endorsement is at cross path with the lgbo interest”.

Chief Uche Ejike regretted that traditional rulers have reduced themselves to pulp in the hands of politicians with inordinate ambition called on the royal fathers to retrace their steps immediately and work only within the confines of the edict that created the traditional institutions.

Meanwhile, the United Progressive Party UPP has described the bombing of the country home of the President General of Ohaneze Ndigbo, Chief Nnia Nwodo as provocative and dastardly.

A statement signed by the party’s National Chairman, Chief Chekwas Okorie said, “It is with shock and anger that we received the sad news of the bombing of the country home of the President-General of Ohaneze. This is a highly provocative and cowardly act.”
“It is public knowledge that Chief Nwodo has recently been a victim of unprovoked verbal attack and threats from certain quarters for reasons of his principled stand on issues in the line of duty as the President-General of Ohaneze. It is also not unlikely that some terrorist organizations from outside Igbo land may be behind this dastardly act with a view to provoking Ndigbo to take precipitate action.”

“We call on the Police, DSS, and all relevant security agencies to spread out their dragnet to track down and bring to justice the culprits and their sponsors.

“We urge Chief Nnia Nwodo to remain strong, resolute and committed to his patriotic leadership of Ndigbo at this trying time. We assure him and the entire leadership of Ohaneze of our solidarity and prayers.”

It should be recalled that the Ukehe, Nsukka country home of Chief Nnia Nwodo was bombed on Sunday, April 29, at about 5am.

The improvised explosive device was hurdled over the fence into the compound, causing extensive damage to the house. No life was lost. No injury sustained either.
