Make your role as Christian father lovely – Fr. Nwanekwu

The centenary parish of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Emekuku was agog last Sunday with celebration as members of Catholic Men Organization (CMO) of the parish joined their counterparts all over Nigeria to mark this year’s Father’s Day celebration.

The fathers who thronged out in their numbers, dressed in their religious uniform and beaming with excitement could be seen playing various roles during the Eucharistic celebration that began the event.

Delivering a homily in the Eucharistic celebration to mark the day, Rev. Fr. Eustace Nwanekwu who assisted the Parish Priest, Very Rev. Fr. Dr. Alex Okoro at the Mass harped on the theme of the gospel of that day which centred on love. He defined love to be placing one’s neighbour above self, adding that love is summed up in doing to others what one wishes self.

Turning to the fathers, the homilist said fatherhood is a vocation and like every other vocation it requires patience and endurance. “Any vocation you find yourself, make it lovely,” he charged the congregation, adding that one’s vocation is capable of attracting admiration from someone in another vocation, depending on how well the vocation is lived up to. He advised fathers to be humble in admitting their wrongs and accepting corrections so as to make amend. The failure of this according to the preacher could be attributed to the root cause of heart attack and consequently early death among the fathers.

The priest lashed at fathers who beat their wives, when he quoted St. Anthony of Padua who said “Hand that raises against a woman that hand should be chopped off because such hand is a cursed hand.” He advised fathers to apply patience, endurance and humility in handling their wives.

The atmosphere in the Mass was changed to that of love and jubilation when the fathers were called out to dance together with their wives at the open field.

Other activities of the celebration which later shifted to the reception ground were cutting of cake, march past by members under different stations of the parish and conferment of Nnaoma CMO Award on distinguished members.
The awardees included: Sir Engr. Godwin Onyeozinia, Mr. Paul Cletus, Oha Ernest O. Amaeshi, Chief Soky Ohale and Mr. Cletus Ibeawuchi. Others are; Noble Chief J.U. Agumanu, Mr. Vitalis Ononiwu Ibekwe, Mr. Richard Offurum and Sir Emmanuel Nwankwo.

The parish priest, Fr. Okoro in a remark, congratulated the fathers and lauded them for their numerous contributions to the church. He however frowned at their poor participation in certain church activities, urging them to see the celebration as a wakeup call to their roles in the church, family and society at large.

In his address at the occasion, the Parish CMO President Mr. Samuel Osuji revealed the intention of the Parish CMO to embark on renovation of the parish convenient house. He solicited their guests financial support so as to actualized the project.

Our reporter said some of the awardees who expressed gratitude for the honour done them, stated that the gesture would spur them to greater service to God and humanity.
