– Honours 24 for outstanding role

Christ’s faithful at the Blessed Tansi Catholic Parish Ugwu Orji Owerri, last Sunday May 6, joined other Catholics throughout Nigeria to celebrate this year’s Father’s Day. The Catholic Men Organization (CMO) of the church facilitated the celebration during which a total of 24 parishioners were honoured with various titles for outstanding efforts towards the growth of the parish. Five received the Award of Golden Father in Christ, four got the CMO Couple of the year, and 11 Worthy Father in Christ. One person was honoured as the Golden Mother in Christ while another got the title of Golden Mother with Golden Voice. One parishioner was honoured as the CMO Mother of 2018 while a member of the Band bagged the title of the Melody Voice of Blessed Tansi Church.

Rev. Fr. Prof. Izum Marcel Onyeaocha presided at the Mass, which he concelebrated with the parish priest, Rev. Fr. Dr. Ben Oparaugo, who also preached the homily. The other concelebrants were: the Assistant Parish Priest, Rev. Fr. Asoluka Victor and the priest-in-residence, Rev. Fr. John Bosco Uchearikor.

The high point of the celebration was the decoration of each awardee with a garland as they sat at the front of the altar and the chief celebrant, Rev. Fr. Onyeocha presented the Award Plaque to them.

In the homily, Fr. Oparaugo called on fathers to emulate the holy life of their patron saint, Joseph, the husband of Mary, who was the foster father of Jesus Christ.

The homilist explained that though Jesus Christ was both God and man and the Blessed Virgin Mary had the grace of Immaculate Conception, Joseph had no particular or special grace but yet the bible testified that he remained steadfast in his obedience to the directives of God. He was a just man who protected Mary and Jesus and did all God asked for, such as agreeing not to disgrace pregnant Mary by sending her away, and undertaking the flight to Egypt with Mary and the infant Jesus in order to save the life of Jesus etc. Fr. Oparaugo urged husbands to love their wives, care for their children and realize that they are the bishops of their domestic church which is the family. He announced the theme of that Sunday as : “The Spirit of God’s love,” and drew from the readings and gospel to explain how God blesses whoever fears him and lives a righteous life. Love, he said means letting off various evils and not insisting on doing things the old way when such way does not give God the glory. He emphasized the need for agape love which centres on the good of another rather than selfishness.

It would be recalled that a two-day retreat on Thursday and Friday preceded the father’s Day celebration. The parish priest, Rev. Fr. Dr. Oparaugo delivered a spiritual talk on the Role of St. Joseph in the Holy Family while the chairman of the Parish Pastoral Council, Mr. Isaac Uzoagwa discussed Duties of fathers in present day Nigeria, respectively.

Speaking with The Leader later, Fr. Oparaugo commended the fathers for satisfactory performance this year, which compared favourably with that of Christian Mothers of the parish. He was particularly impressed with the way CMO members showed enthusiasm in the celebration in spite of the harsh economic times. “This good outing gives Christ’s faithful of the parish hope of a brighter future,” he assured.

In his own remarks, the President General of the CMO, Mr. Charles Egbuokporo expressed joy that though the initial response was not encouraging, but eventually members became very enthusiastic. He commended his executive and the Planning Committee headed by Engr. Ernest Onukogu for their co-operation as well as the awardees and their supporters for their sacrifice and generosity to the growth of the parish.
