… Fr. Onyeneke wants fathers to be treated as kings

Christ’s faithful of St. Michael’s Parish Umuguma Sunday 6th May, 2018 joined other Catholics throughout the Archdiocese of Owerri to mark 2018 Father’s Day. It was with joy and excitement that Father’s Day was celebrated in honour of St. Joseph (spouse of Mary) who is the patron saint of Catholic Men Organization (CMO).

Activities marking the feast began the previous day with a seminar titled: Crimes and Environment insecurity in our society presented by Bro Darlington Benjamin. According to him, crime is as old as mankind. He made reference to Genesis 4:8 where Cain murdered his blood brother Abel because of envy. In his opinion, every human being is a potential criminal until you exonerate yourself from the crime upon sufficient evidence. Crime is an omission of an act that is allowed in the penal code or the commission of an act that is prohibited or disallowed in the penal code. Bro. Benjamin also defined security as the act of safeguarding life and property. It is the pivot and general pillar on whose platform all developmental activities thrive. According to him, we should be aware of our environment with influx of strangers everywhere. Who are those people and where are they coming from?

He concluded his presentation, by pointing out areas where we should be conscious such as answering calls in the petro) stations; use of cell phone light to start or put on the generator, answering calls while the phone is charging etc.

The Holy Mass to mark the occasion was presided over by the parish priest Rev. Fr. Paschal Onyeneke who at the homily reflected on the day’s readings. Noting that the readings centered on love, he urged Christians to love with their whole heart since love is practical. “We should not love people for what they have achieved in life rather for who they are”, the priest said. Reminding the faithful the important role fathers in families, Fr. Onyeneke urged them to treat their fathers as kings in all ramifications. “They should be treated with love and kindness especially as they ae ageing.”

The event was used to honour notable Umuguma sons and daughters with “Christ is our leader humanity awards”. Hon Victor Osigwe, TC Chairman of Owerri West L.G. Council, who expressed delight on the honor, used the medium to point out some of the developmental projects of the rescue mission administration, particularly the construction of Umuguma/Okuku, Ohii and Ihiagwa roads etc. He noted that soon, the construction of Umuguma/Avu road will commence. Other recipients included Mrs. Tina Njoku-Opara, Mr. Nicholas Anoruo, Mr. Obed Agoha – Chairman World Bank Market, Engr. Henry Igbokwe, Hon Emma Nlem, Hon. George Obi Kamalu, John Njoku, and Bro. John Ogbuji.

Others honoured included Ezinna Ignatius Nzereogu, Ezinna Isaac Njoku, Ezinna Herbert Akagha and Star Father Charles Ohale, Hon Kenneth Ibemere, and Sir Levy Oguike.

The CMO President, Bro Pius Ekeulu commended the past executive led by Sir Godwin Onuegbulam (KSJI), the past executive, group leaders and members of the planning committee chaired by Chief (Sir) Paschal Ezikeojiaku for this year’s auspicious outing.

The highpoint of the occasion was the fabulous refreshment that blew up the celebration with the parish priest, parishioners and guests bust into dancing to mark the end of the 2018 Father’s Day.
