Dapchi Abduction – One Kidnap Too Many!

Dapchi Abduction

When we thought we had seen and heard it all with the abduction of over 200 schoolgirls from Chibok, in Borno State in 2014, we are confronted with yet another strange abduction of 110 young students from the Government Science and Technical Girls’ College Dapchi in Yobe State. Some people have rightly described it as a national disgrace and that is what it is. It is indeed an embarrassment for which the Federal Government should cover its face in shame. The current kidnap comes four years after Chibok and less than a year to the nation’s next general election. We…

Cattle Colony: Ndigbo be warned

cattle colony

Never before, in the history of Nigeria, had Fulani herdsmen clashes with farmers over the destruction of farm crops by cattle, assumed the alarming dimension as it has in the last three years. Before now, there have been skirmishes and clashes in various parts of the South and Middle Belt Regions between these two groups. But since 2015 when the present Federal Government came into power, the boldness at which the herdsmen operate and rampage farmlands and communities have reached an intolerable level. Things are taking this new dimension because government seems to be siding, aiding and abating the…

Catholic Bishops Say Nigeria Under Siege …Reject Cattle colonies

OUR HOPE IN DESPAIR: TOWARDS NATIONAL RESTORATION

Catholic Bishops are not at all amused by the consistent killings and bloodshed in the country, undermining what little success has been made in the fight against Boko Haram. A statement issued by the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) January 16, said the country is under siege and warned that it is easier to prevent war than stop it after it has started. They say war is looming in the country. “Our beloved country appears to be under siege from many forces. Repeatedly, innocent citizens in different communities across the nation are brutally attacked and their sources of…

Too many killings with Impunity

Day of anger anguish in Benue

No words, than sorrow, tears and anguish can best describe the tragic experience of victims of mass killings that took place on New Year Day, 2018 in some parts of our country. A monarch and his pregnant wife were sent to their untimely graves on the same New Year Day in Kaduna State, while hoodlums attacked churches and raped worshippers in Ilorin,…

THE INVASION OF IGBOLAND BY NIGERIAN ARMY – A RIDICULOUS MISSION

The Invasion of Igboland by Nigerian Army – A Ridiculous Mission

Nathaniel I. NDIOKWERE  Preamble NIGERIA NOT A ZOO, BUT A JUNGLE You come to the above conclusion, without much reflection when you consider absurdities that one finds “Only in Nigeria!”. Just one example: “NIGERIA’S UNITY IS NOT NEGOTIABLE!” And this testament was written and signed by two people, BUHARI and OJUKWU, and this time the venue was not ABURI, in GHANA, but in KATSINA, NORTHERN NIGERIA! The implication of this two-man agreement is that anyone that tampers with the sacred accord, the testament, must be ruthlessly deal with! Wow! Recently, Philip Omenukwa, a young Nigerian writer, in a fine article…

Now our President is back

President Buhari’s return to the country has renewed hope in an otherwise hopeless situation.  All the doubts, fears and speculations have arguably been put to rest, at least for now. The President is here! Thanks to the UK doctors who have given him the okay to come back home and resume work.   Nevertheless, it is obvious that President Buhari’s long absence has taken its toll on the nation, its people, politics and economy. It has created loopholes, rumours and left several unanswered questions. Although we do not and have never doubted the competence of Prof. Yemi Osinbajo who has…

Biafra: Nigeria is standing before the Red Sea – Bishop Kukah

The Bishop of Catholic Diocese of Sokoto, Most Rev. Matthew Kukah, has reacted to the agitation for an independent state of Biafra led by the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu. The cleric alluded to one of Biblical stories of the Israelites to describe the question of Nigeria’s unity. According to him, the situation in Nigeria can be likened to when the Israelites stood before the Red Sea during their exit from captivity. He said: “We cannot recover territory from Boko Haram only to surrender it to others; we are Nigeria and Nigeria will continue to…

Chibok Girls: Exchange for more blood

There is no doubt  that Nigerians wants the 217 schoolgirls forcefully taken away from their school by Boko Haram, nearly three years ago, back home.  What they do not want is to exchange the girls for more kidnapping and more blood, which is what Boko Haram represents and promises Nigeria. It is sad that kidnapping, even of school children, is no longer a strange thing in Nigeria.  Since the Chibok girls were whisked away from their school on May 14, 2014, other cases of kidnapping of students have occurred. Nevertheless, none was on the same scale as the Chibok kidnap…

Most Rev. Oliver Dashe, the Catholic Bishop of Maiduguri Diocese on Sunday urged Nigerians to offer prayers to the military to consolidate its successes in the current war against Boko Haram insurgents in the North East. He said although the military had recorded success in the operations, it needed spiritual help to crush the insurgents finally. Dashe said, however, that the military must get engaged in constant prayers as the Boko Haram war required more than…

Trumpism as The Trump-Card of Eroding Western Civilisation (1)

PREAMBLE In this article, we shall attempt at focusing chiefly on Donald Trump and by extension delineate, succinctly, the preponderant negative impact of radicalism or fanaticism on the world. Indeed, on how the world seem to be stung to a stage of stupor by the alarming influence of an apparently infinitesimal percentage of a group of people who seem better organised and truculently systematic in executing their programme of engulfing the rest of humanity like the amoeba. Some ideas expressed in this article that touch on fanaticism are apologies to Dr. Emmanuel Tanya, a well-known, German psychiatrist.   TRUMPISM For…

No terrorist group shouts ‘Jesus’ before attacking – CAN replies Soyinka

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), has criticized remarks made by Nobel Laureate, Wole Soyinka, that religion will destroy Nigeria if not tamed. Soyinka made the statement at a book presentation in Abuja last Thursday. He said: “I would like to transfer that cry (by President Muhammadu Buhari on corruption) from the moral zone to the terrain of religion. If we do not tame religion in this nation, religion will kill us.” Reacting to this statement, CAN’s National Director, Legal and Public Affairs, Kwamkur Samuel, insisted that religion was not responsible for Nigeria’s problems. “With due respect to Prof. Soyinka,…

Anglican Church demands state of emergency for South East roads

The Amichi Anglican Diocese in Anambra State has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to declare a state of emergency for  South East roads, most of which are in a deplorable condition. Rising from it synod at Amichi, the Church observed that the condition of the roads was adversely affecting the economic wellbeing of the people of the zone and argued that something positive needs to be done to ameliorate the situation. Of the federal roads in the area, the worst are the Enugu–Onitsha, Aba–Ikot Ekpene and the Onitsha-Nnewi-Amichi-Uga-Okigwe highways, which pass through the diocese. The communiqué, issued after the synod presided…
