Our only ‘fanaticism’ should be love – Pope tells Egypt’s Catholics

Last week Saturday Pope Francis told Egyptian Catholics that truly living the faith means ridding ourselves of hypocritical attitudes and focusing on the only obsession that counts: loving others, no matter how hard it is. “God is pleased only by a faith that is proclaimed by our lives, for the only fanaticism believers can have is that of charity! Any other fanaticism does not come from God and is not pleasing to him!” the Pope said April 29. True faith, he said, “is one that makes us more charitable, more merciful, more honest and more humane. It moves our hearts…

From Hosanna to Crucifixion

Pastors corner with Fr Henry Ibe

It’s Palm Sunday today and it is Passion Sunday! It is a day of dramas and monumental contradictions. On this day, we commemorate the triumphal entry of a king who ends up dying like a common criminal. It is a day of both “Hosanna”,and of “Crucify him!” It’s a day of acclamation: “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord” and, also, a day of denials: “I do not know him!” It’s a day of paying homage and, also, a day of mockery!   Dear friends, as we recall one of the most dramatic episodes of the…

ON DIVINE PRUNING

Pastors corner with Fr Henry Ibe

When vines are left to their own devices in the wild, the result is always telling. The plants meander through underbrush, grasping anything and everything they come in contact with. They dissipate their precious, creative energies clinging to rocks, wild shrubs and tree trunks. Come harvest time what you get is tiny, usually not-so-tasty fruits. The story is different for a well-groomed vine. The plants grow upright and strong, primed for bountiful yields of huge clusters of robust, tasty grapes. The difference is in the pruning! Consider also a body wound, when it is left to fester for a…

Death as the Road To Life

Christ has one personal identity to save and to reveal, and one mission to fulfill. Now to reveal His identity and to fulfill His mission, to save the truth of His life, He is disposed to all, even to loose His physical life. The “unconditional” and absolute decision to be Himself and fulfill His Mission at “any” cost is the supreme act of faithfulness (obedience) to God.   An Identity To Reveal And A Mission To Fulfill The loss of one’s life (death) is the “sign”, the verification and  absolute “test” of fidelity to one’s identity and mission received from…

Pope Francis Warns Against Temptation to Worldliness

During his daily mass at Domus Sanctae Marthae, Pope Francis reminded those present that following Jesus is not a calling to power, but a calling to follow the way of the Cross. The Mass was concelebrated by Archbishop Rino Fisichella and Msgr. José Octavio Ruiz Arenas, president and secretary of the Pontifical Council for the New Evangelization, respectively. Also in attendance were a group of priests from the Council and staff from the Vatican Power Station and Technical Laboratory of the Governorate of Vatican carpentry, accompanied by Engineer Pier Carlo Cuscianna, Director of Technical Services of the Governorate.
