Pope prays for victims of Italy quake

Instead of giving the usual catechesis during his Wednesday general audience, Pope Francis decided to postpone the speech, leading pilgrims in praying the Sorrowful Mysteries of the Rosary for the victims of an earthquake that rocked central Italy earlier Wednesday Morning. “On hearing the news of the earthquake that has struck central Italy and which has devastated many areas and left many wounded, I cannot fail to express my heartfelt sorrow and spiritual closeness to all those present in the zones afflicted,” the Pope said Aug. 24. He offered his condolences to all who have lost loved ones, and he…

Muslim migrants throw 12 Christians into high sea

Rome (CNN) Muslims who were among migrants trying to get from Libya to Italy in a boat this week threw 12 fellow passengers overboard — killing them — because the 12 were Christians, Italian police said Thursday. Italian authorities have arrested 15 people on suspicion of murdering the Christians at sea, police in Palermo, Sicily, said. The original group of 105 people left Libya on Tuesday in a rubber boat. Sometime during the trip north across the Mediterranean Sea, the alleged assailants — Muslims from the Ivory Coast, Mali and Senegal — threw the 12 overboard, police said. Other…

ATTACK ON CHRISTIANS: Italy considers military action against Boko Haram – Urges Europe to wake-up

Italian Foreign Minister, Paolo Gentiloni has said his country may consider contributing to tackling the Boko Haram insurgents in Nigeria. Speaking in Rome April 8, Gentiloni said Italy would also help to tackle extremist groups in Libya. He said military action response to extremism was inevitable and implied military consequences. “I won’t use the word ‘combat’ to avoid being painted as a crusader,” he said. Gentiloni said more should also be done to tackle religious persecution. “The fact that these groups are targeting Christians brings the needs to help even closer to home, because it concerns our identity and…

CANONIZING TWO ROLE MODELS OF THE CHURCH

Today, two giants of the Roman Catholic faith will become saints and millions of people, including Nigerians have traveled to Rome for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Pope Francis’ decision to declare two of his predecessors, Pope John XXIII and John Paul II saints at the same time is unprecedented and taking the world by storm. The church offers the lives of outstanding women and men to us as models of holiness, declaring them “Blessed” or “Saint”. This is not a statement about perfection. It does not mean that the person was without imperfection or sin. Beatification and canonization mean that a…

Shipwreck tragedy: Italy to Hold State Funeral for 274 Victims, Eritrea Objects

Why do Italy want to play politics over the coffins of our dead nationals by granting full posthumous citizenship while criminalizing and deporting the survivors? Is it a pre-emptive measure to deny the right to return of the bodies back to Eritrea for proper burial? Prime Minister’s announcement dashed the hope of the victims family to bury their loved ones right where they belong – Eritrea. Italy will hold a state funeral for the victims of last week’s shipwreck tragedy off Lampedusa, Prime Minister Enrico Letta said during a visit to the island where more than 300 African migrants are…

Italy’s First Black Cabinet Minister, Faces Death Threats

But Cecile Kyenge says she’s not afraid and challenged Italians to respond to such intimidation themselves to prove that Italy isn’t racist. Kyenge, a Congolese-born doctor who has lived in Italy since 1983, has been the target of racist diatribes ever since she was named integration minister in April. She has been called “Congolese monkey,” and a member of a “bonga bonga government.” Last week, a local politician from the xenophobic Northern League party was expelled from the party after she suggested on Facebook: “Why doesn’t someone rape her (Kyenge), so she can understand what victims of atrocious crimes feel?”…
