OUR MISSION AS PRIESTS TO THE WORLD OF POLITICS

Editor’s Note: Catholic Priests have a legitimate right to participate and get involved in Politics. Here are some of the reasons why they should take part in the politics of the land. We will elaborate on the different themes in due course.   Introduction We priests cannot afford to allow ourselves be coerced, intimidated or forced to shy or stay away from the “world” of politics; this is so because, by our vocation, mandate and mission, politics is one such “world” to which Christ commissions His Church and ministers to evangelize, to preach to, to spiritually and morally direct….

Celebrating St. John Mary Vianney, Patron Saint of Parish Priests & Parishioners

(Feast Day, August 4th, 2017) _________________________ August 4th, 2017 is the Feast day of St. John Mary Vianney, Patron Saint of priests and parishioners. St. John Mary Vianney was a model of priestly virtues, a priest who lived what he preached. In the Encyclical of Pope John XXIII on St. John Mary Vianney, we learnt that he was posted by his Bishop to a remote village, Ars in France. The village had a population of 230 people. Before he left for his posting, his Bishop warned him that in Ars, religious practice was in a sorry state and that there…

Our only ‘fanaticism’ should be love – Pope tells Egypt’s Catholics

Last week Saturday Pope Francis told Egyptian Catholics that truly living the faith means ridding ourselves of hypocritical attitudes and focusing on the only obsession that counts: loving others, no matter how hard it is. “God is pleased only by a faith that is proclaimed by our lives, for the only fanaticism believers can have is that of charity! Any other fanaticism does not come from God and is not pleasing to him!” the Pope said April 29. True faith, he said, “is one that makes us more charitable, more merciful, more honest and more humane. It moves our hearts…

Pope Francis confirms ban on ordaining women priests

The Catholic Church insistence that it cannot ordain women to the priesthood and episcopacy is a teaching likely to last forever, Pope Francis said. After being hosted by the Lutheran Church of Sweden, which is led by Archbishop Antje Jackelen of Uppsala, the nation’s first woman primate, Pope Francis was asked Nov. 1 if the Catholic Church might one day have women priests and bishops. As he has done in the past, the pope responded that the question was settled in 1994 by St. John Paul II, who taught that because Jesus chose only men as his apostles, the ordination…

Letters to the Editor | Catholic Church: Matters arising

I wish to say few things that I have observed in our Catholic church in Imo State. I felt sorry for the woman whose son was stolen in a Catholic Church in Okigwe.  The woman explained that the church was hot and that made the child to cry.  She asked the elder sister to take him out which means that if there was no heat in the church the boy would not have been stolen.  Now in the real sense, who would we blame, the priest of course.  Elsewhere, priests check the fans on Saturdays and anyone that is found…

It was therefore not surprising that the residents, trooped out in their large numbers to Wethedral Road, on Saturday, June 8, 2013, to receive the Archbishop and his entourage. Those who did not go for the boundary reception watched the prelates ”triumphant entry” into Ikenegbu from…

MEN OF GOD AS DEMIGODS IN NIGERIA (2)

See previous article “MEN OF GOD AS  DEMIGODS IN NIGERIA (1) “ The use of the title “man of God” as passport to wealth, power and stardom partly accounts for the unhealthy proliferation of churches in the country. General unemployment is perhaps a remote factor, but people would not have been so much drawn to church business if it were not seen as a short-cut to wealth, power and stardom. Some of the “men of God” mentioned earlier keep featuring in the list of the richest and most influential men in the world today. Benefiting more from this whole scenario,…

The priest said they broke into his office and any other office…

Prince Tina – Gifted Hands surrender to God

No, you’re not in Rome! You’re not also in a church or cathedral – Catholic or Anglican.  You’re at Prince Tina, a place where ‘holy wears’ are made with gifted hands. A beautiful arrangement of vestments is the first sign that you are in a different tailoring environment.  The colours are in purple, red, white, gold and green, all cleverly put together with matching symbols and embroidery.  You’re tempted to run your fingers on the garments but are somehow restrained – “they’re holy!” Yet the beauty grips you, and you wish you could own at least one but you cannot….

Full text of Bishop Okpaleke’s Post-ordination speech (2)

Contd. from last edition In a lighter mood, let me confess that now I know firsthand the emotions women go through when they are getting married. It is like being transplanted from one location to another with the uncertainties and adaptation challenges therefrom. The experience is made worse if the woman notices sins of non-acceptance by some in her place of marriage. But many women know that in spite of the roughness of the beginnings, better days could be ahead and that the best way to ensure better days ahead is by loving and serving all irrespective of what has…
