Welcome home St. Michael – Ngwoma Obube

Turning through the pages of history one can say that some spiritual journeys are not planned.  Sometimes a person, family or a Christian community can proceed on an unplanned spiritual journey by merely following events as they unfold, without a clear cut vision as to what lies ahead, only following the orders of the hierarchy and making themselves relevant, not knowing what distance it entails and the many stops for whatever reasons. A journey covering a period of about seventy years must have encountered some rough pathways not to mention streams and rough weather. Such was the story of St….

The morality of sharing money to Pupils in Imo (4)

MORAL IMPLICATIONS The practice of sharing money to children in primary and secondary schools in Imo state carries with it strong moral implications. It raises serious question as to whether that remains the best way to demonstrate the governor’s large hearted disposition towards children in the state.  It concerns us principally because the money in question belongs to the state; it is not as if the governor is sharing his personal money to the children which any other person can do without raising moral questions. In the first instance, a democratically elected government should be able to listen to parents who…

The morality of sharing money to Pupils in Imo (3)

As October 1 draws near

Opportunism: Another factor has to do with those whose responsibility it is to share this money. God knows that many Nigerians are opportunists at different levels. When I went to enquire on the modalities for sharing this money, I reliably gathered that agents from the ministry or from the government come to do the jobs themselves. The money is not collected by proxy; it is given only to students present at the time of distribution. When compared with election periods and delivery of ballot boxes to polling centres for voting in Nigeria and the artificial delay that always followed, I…

The morality of sharing money to pupils in Imo (1)

Two parents called my line on Monday, April 29 at about 7.30 – 8.00pm to launch a complaint. They said they were calling in from one of the towns in Owerri North LGA. Their complaint was that their children (pupils) in the primary schools were coming back from schools at that time of the day. Reason, they were waiting to receive the 300naira stipend from the governor before going back to their homes. I couldn’t understand that myself but went into some investigations to gather from authoritative sources that the allegations were founded. It was alleged that those who came…
