The Catholic Church and abolition of Osu Caste System in Igbo land: Locating the problem

Several efforts have been made by the Catholic Church and concerned stakeholders of Igbo society in South Eastern Nigeria for abolition of Osu caste system to free them from bondage, stigma, odium and to balance the equality of man at different stratum in our contemporary Igbo society as well as consolidate man’s reconciliation with God through salvation of Christ, according to the Christian theology. Effort made by secularists to abolish Osu Caste system has yielded below 30% positive result due to man’s dogmatic attitude towards a traditional dogma developed for unknown reason. From a secular perspective, the total abolition…

Open letter to Nnamdi Kanu

By Adiele Ephraim Sometime in May 2014, I was at Lekki Beach, a place we like to call CLASS OF WIZARDS or CLASS for short. It’s a place where young men and sometimes women come to chill out and share ideas on every topic there is to discuss. On this day, one class member, Celestine seemed hyper happy. He kept smiling for no apparent reason. This prompted the rest of the class to ask what the happiness was about. Soon enough he began telling us about Radio Biafra, gave us the dial and started telling us about a demonstration scheduled…

Renewed agitation for Biafra (1)

By Ochereome Nnanna My people have a proverb which says: a person who was not present when a corpse was buried runs the risk of exhuming it from the foot end rather than the head. If you check the age profile of the pro-Biafra multitudes fuming with ballistic wrath and thronging the streets in the Igbo-speaking cities of the East and parts of South-South, you will find out that they are mostly the youth born long after the end of the Biafra-Nigeria civil war over 45 years ago. The oldies among them couldn’t have been more than teenage soldiers. The…

EEDC plunges Owerri into darkness

Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) has plunged several parts of Imo State into darkness since three weeks now, with no flicker of electricity in the affected places. Several days of investigations carried out by Business Day correspondent in parts of the state showed that a circuit breaker line at a major distribution line at Owerri-Onitsha Expressway got destroyed. BusinessDay reliably gathered from an insider that Owerri Business District beckoned on EEDC headquarters in Enugu to approve and deploy materials for the circuit-breaker’s replacement, but Enugu asked Owerri to source for it and repair, whereas the latter said it didn’t…

Why Neglect Mgbuisii, Imo Government?

Mgbuisii as the name suggests in her dialect means a community made up of six large villages that do not live together rather in different locations which include Ilile (now autonomous community), Oburugo, Umuonu, Umuoso, Nkaraha and Umuagwu.  Mgbuisii has neighbouring communities like Umuagwo, Umuokanne and Umuapu.  As a community it has some cultural heritages like other communities. Mgbuisii is one of the communities under Orlu Senatorial Zone of Imo State and also one of the communities in Ohaji/Egbema State Constituency, more so it is among the communities in Ohaji to be precise. The people of Mgbuisii are basically farmers…

Keep quiet, you didn’t make me governor – Okorocha tells Massob Leader

Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha, has dismissed a statement credited to the leader of the Movement for the Actualization State of Biafra (MASSOB), Chief Ralph Uwazuruike, that he was instrumental to making him the governor of the state. The governor described the claim of the MASSOB leader as a ploy to shore up his sagging image in the South East. According to a statement signed by Mr. Sam Onwuemeodo, Senior Special Assistant (Media) to Governor Okorocha, there was no iota of truth in Chief Uwazuruike’s claim because the MASSOB leader neither worked nor campaigned for Okorocha in the 2011 governorship…
