Obama starts long awaited Africa tour at Slave Port

Almost four centuries after Africans started being shipped to North America as slaves, the first U.S. president of African ancestry will on Thursday visit an infamous embarkation point for those destined for lives in chains. In his first – and, many Africans say, long-overdue – extended tour of the continent, President Barack Obama will focus on political and economic issues, but is also paying homage to a painful chapter in American history. On the first leg of his eight-day visit he is taking his family to the House of Slaves, a fort built in the late 18th century on Goree…

Understanding the Year of Faith

Pope Emeritus, Benedict XVI, last year announced the period October 11, 2012 to November 24, 2013 as “The Year of Faith” to be observed by Catholics throughout the world. Official Vatican documents, particularly “The Door of Faith”, issued by the Pope Emeritus explained that the period will enable Christ’s faithful re-discover and share with others the precious gift of faith entrusted to the Church. This re-discovery and sharing of Catholic faith is expected to be facilitated by living out the teachings of the catechism of the Catholic Church, which is rich in the systematic presentation of our faith.  It is…

THE TEN ‘I’s THAT BREAK THE HOME

As October 1 draws near

At about 19.02 on Friday, May 24, I received the following text message, “Good evening Fr. I go straight to your write ups every Sunday because of the way you handle burning issues. Please I would like you to handle marital issues because many homes are breaking. Most men always allow their ego to rule them thereby leaving their God given duties to their families especially their wives. Let them know what God said about loving their wives please.” This text added a real push to what I actually intended to do namely, to x ray the causes of numerous…

World’s oldest person dies at 116

The world’s oldest person has died in Japan, aged 116 — just days after the passing of a Chinese woman with a rival claim to the title. Jiroemon Kimura, a former postman, died of natural causes in hospital in his hometown of Kyotango, western Japan, in the early hours of Wednesday, city officials told CNN. In December, Kimura had been recognized by Guinness World Records as the world’s oldest living person, and as the oldest man whose age had ever been verified. “I wanted him to live longer,” his nephew, Tamotsu Miyake, told Japanese television network TV Asahi. “His life…

THE GRATUITOUS LOVE OF GOD OVERCOMES SIN

One of the fundamental themes of St. Luke’s gospel is the self manifestation of Jesus as One who saves sinners.  In this sense He already proclaims Himself God because in the consciousness of the Jews only God can forgive sins.   SIN IS THE DEATH OF MAN Sin is the rejection of communion with God and the breaking up of people convoked by God.  Offence to God is therefore a true and radical alienation of man from God.  Sin is the death of man.  Man is close to himself to the extent he is close to others.  He truly arrives…

Come, Let Us Imitate The Faith Of Mary – (2)

See the previous article on this topic Then the massacre of the Holy Innocents. Does that incident hit us? Think of it! : The first effect of the Saviour’s birth was that almost every family in the area with a male child was plunged into mourning. Every babe under two years was murdered, butchered. And as a mother, Mary knew the impact on the mothers whose children were massacred. What excruciating agony and desolate darkness her faith must have gone through! What a superhuman effort it must have taken for her to remain loyal, to continue to believe, respect and…

ACHEBE AND THE INVENTION OF AFRICAN LITERATURE (1)

came strong on the world stage with the publication of his first novel, Things Fall Apart. It is a work widely considered to have defined African literature and brought balance to world literature. This is despite the fact that there were other pioneering efforts regarding African prose by African indigenous writers. By 1933 Omenụkọ by Pita Nwana had been published, followed by the Onitsha Market Literature through which Cyprian Ekwensi published pamphlet stories like Ikolo the Wrestler and Other Ibo Tales (1947) and When Love Whispers (1948). These were before Amos Tutuola’s The Palm-Wine Drinkard (1952), which many regard as…

GOD’S SPIRIT AND WORD IN THE TIMES OF PROMISES

“No one can say ‘Jesus is Lord’ except by the Holy Spirit”, “God has sent the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, crying ‘Abba! Father’!  “This knowledge of faith is possible only in the Holy Spirit: to be in touch with Christ, we must first have been touched by the Holy Spirit.  He comes to meet us and kindles faith in us” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 683). The Spirit is the gift of the Father intimate to the work of the Son and through whom we know, confess and benefit from that work.  The Spirit is “the Lord…

PASTOR’S CONER – COME, LORD JESUS!

A shout of love expresses the tension of Christ-spouse and of the Church (humanity)-spouse towards the definitive encounter at the end of the history of salvation: when the Passover of all creation will be accomplished through new heavens and new earth which the Lord will perform; when the love with which the Father loves the Son will be in the disciples in a perfect communion (Gosp).  Vat II speaking of the eschatological nature of the pilgrim Church and of its union with the heavenly Church (LG48), confirmed the vision of hope which the inauguration of the new humanity in Christ…
