The Catholic Archdiocese of Owerri has received a mobile Library from the Irish Aid Organization (TROCAIRE). The presentation took place at the Secretariat of the Archdiocese in Owerri. The donation was made through a representative of the Organization, Dr. Uju Magnus Amajirionwu.

During the hand-over ceremony the Chancellor of the Archdiocese and Archbishop’s Secretary, Rev. Fr. Alphonsus Oha prayed and blessed the mobile Library Van. In attendance were other priests, teachers and students from some schools within the Owerri Metropolis, members of the Diocesan Education Commission and other dignitaries.

In his address, the Education Director of the Archdiocese of Owerri, Rev. Fr. Victor Eleba, welcomed the members of the organization on behalf of the Archbishop, His Grace Most Rev. Anthony J.V. Obinna. According to him, the Commission is one of the beneficiaries of a mobile Library with over 3000 volumes of books, which will go a long way towards improving the reading culture of students and a source of reference materials for teachers and research students in Secondary Schools and Universities.

He however, appealed to the Organization to assist towards improving infrastructural facilities and stem the dilapidation and decay in the education system.

In a vote of thanks, the Administrator of Maria Assumpta Cathedral, Owerri. Rev. Fr. Andrew Nkwocha expressed appreciation to the members of the Organization, especially to the Leader of the delegation, Dr. Magnus Amajirionwu, and prayed God’s blessing on his family.

In a concelebration Holy Mass, held at St. Patrick’s Catholic  Church Umuneche Ntu, Fr Victor Eleba who delivered the homily, noted that the purpose of the gathering was to witness  the influence of  light that will radicate lack of knowledge in the community.

He appealed to other sons of the community abroad to emulate Dr. Amajirionwu’s gesture for the growth of their community, stressing that investment in education will help to eradicate poverty.

Fr. Eleba regretted that the attitude of some parents towards sacrificing for the future of the children these day is poor, while encouraging those present never to relent in providing for the growth and development of their children. He prayed God’s blessing on parents and for the repose of the souls of Dr. Sylvester Azubike Amajirionwu and wife late Constance Uju Amajirionwu.

In a reception that followed, Scholarships were awarded to outstanding pupils of St. Patrick’s Nursery and Primary school, who also marked their first graduation ceremony. Dr. Amajirionwu said that the scholarship project was initiated to immortalize the immense contributions of his late wife, towards the actualization of the war against poverty, and also to commorate the 5th memorial anniversary of his father’s death, who until death served as Chairman, Imo State Library Board.

He described the presentation of the mobile Library; as a way of tackling the twin issues of paucity of books in the educational system and promotion of the culture of reading and self development amongst school children. He also advised that the mobile library be prudently managed.

Dr. Magnus Amajirionwu also appreciated his mother Nneoma Theresa, who was also present and his late father for instilling in him and his siblings, fear of God, and sound education.

He thanked Archbishop, Anthony Obinna, and the Clergy, Religious and Laity of Owerri Archdiocese for hosting the presentation ceremony.

Highlight of the occasion was the presentation of Awards to 18 pupils with outstanding performance of above 50 percent by Dr. Amajijionwu.
