Polytechnic lecturers suspend strike

Lecturers of polytechnics, Tuesday, July 16, 2013 suspended their three-month nationwide strike, which started in April this year as a result of government’s failure to meet the demands of the Academic Union of Polytechnics (ASUP).

A statement from the Union’s Publicity Secretary, Clement Chariman said that they suspended the strike following the progress made  in their negotiation with the government and the intervention of the Joint Senate and House of Representatives Committee on Education.

According to the statement, the decision was to enable the Joint Committee liaise with relevant ministries, agencies and parastatals with a view to tackling the issues contained in the union’s demands within one month as against the two weeks earlier requested by the committee.

The union noted that the circular for the implementation of CONTISS 15 for lower cadres had been released, while much work had been done in the re-constitution of Governing Councils of Federal Polytechnics, which were earlier omitted.  The union advised its stakeholders in the negotiation to respect the agreement reached to avoid further disruption of academic activities in the polytechnics.
