Prof. Nwajiuba to deliver 2014 Odenigbo lecture

Professor Chinedu Nwajiuba of the Imo State University Owerri will deliver the 2014 Odenigbo lecture.

The Most Rev. Anthony J.V. Obinna, Catholic Archbishop of Owerri and founder Odenigbo lecture series, announced the choice of Prof. Nwajiuba at Assumpta Cathedral Owerri.

According to the prelate, Prof. Nwajiuba will speak on: Ochichi Oma: Olileanya Ohaneze (Good Governance: Expectation of the public).

This year’s lecture, delivered by Prof. Pita Ejiofo, former Vice-Chancellor, Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka, Anambra State was preceded by a concelebrated Pontifical Mass.  It was presided over by Archbishop Obinna while Rev. Fr. Dr. Innocent Maduakolam Osuagwu delivered the homily.  (Details in our next edition).

Neglect of Igbo Language

On those responsible for the present critical situation of Igbo Language, Prof Ejiofo blamed teachers, many of who prevent pupils from speaking Igbo Language in class; Igbo parents who speak only English to their children and who unashamedly  tell visitors that, “Junior does not understand Igbo;” Universities that use English Language to teach Igbo; Igbo elders who write address and funeral  orations in English, and who encourage such phrases as “ Happy Birthday,” “Happy New Year”, “Happy Easter” etc.

Also to blame are some priests who conduct masses and services in English Language simply because 5% of the congregation is non-Igbo.

However, he heaped the biggest blame on Igbo government: “How much was budgeted for the promotion of Igbo Language since the end of the Civil War? What law did they make to ensure that Igbo Language is compulsory in both primary and secondary schools, and also made a condition for gaining admission into higher institutions in Igbland?”

Raising a Lenten Catholic Hymn – “Bianu soro m bee akwa nwa Oge” he beckoned on ndigbo to join him in weeping for Igbo Language, because an abomination is about to take place, that Igbo Language is about to die and that ndigbo are responsible for the death.

Our reporter, Emeka Ani, said those  present at the lecture were; the Catholic Bishop of Aba, Most Rev. Dr. Vincent Ezeonyia, the Deputy Governor of Imo State, Eze Madumere, who represented Governor Okorocha, Senator Chris Anyanwu, Prof. Mrs. Viola Onwuliri, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, representatives of Governor Peter Obi of Anambra State and Hon.
