“Pensioners should have access to their funds as at when due’ – Dr. Onwumere

The National Vice President of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (South East) High Chief (Dr) Emeka Onwumere has called for reforms in the administration of the National pension system to facilitate prompt and adequate pension payments to pensioners as at when due.
He also called on the federal and State governments to put in safeguards to protect the interests of Pensioners and lamented that corruption remains the greatest threat to pension administration in the country.
He made these remarks whilst speaking to the leader in his country home at the gate way town of Owerre Umudioka.
The amiable Octogenarian indicated that efforts are in the pipeline by the Nigerian Union of Pensioners to bring about the desired reforms and alleviate the suffering of pensioners Nation wide.
He decried the situation whereby pensioners are dying under severe circumstances without harvesting the fruits of their labour and called on the various State governments to ensure adequate allocations for pension administration.
He however praised the Imo State Governor for the exceptional Love he has for Pensioners and the implementations of the CGC which enables pensioners in the State to collect their entitlements in their various community councils with the attendant benefits of a ministry coordinating pension affairs in the State.
He also called on Civil servants to invest wisely a portion of their incomes whilst in service and prepare for retirement adequately.
Said he, “he who does not prepare for retirement will tire out”.
He called on pensioners to prepare for another life of service to humanity and their communities after retirement because you may be “retired but not tired”
In another vein, the former staff of IBC and teacher called for support for the Owelle Rochas administration and described the Governor as compassionate Nigerian.
According to him,
“There is no alternative to the Visions of the rescue Mission in Imo state. We endorse the Owelle free education Policy, creation of three mayoralties and infrastructural developments in the state.”
He however lamented over the poor State of the access road linking Owerre Umudioka /Umuzike and Eziachi which is in a deplorable state of disrepair and abandoned. And called on the State government to give the inter community road priority.
On the issue of Labour relations, he praised the wonderful cooperation between the Nigerian Union of pensioners with the Nigeria labour Organization and the Trade Union Congress which has paved way for peace in the state.
