Holy Ghost College Owerri holds Inter-house Sports – Says all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy
It was fun-filled day at Holy Ghost College, Owerri as students, staff and management of the school marked their Annual Inter-house Sports on Friday, February 21, 2014.
The event which was segmented into two sections started with the celebration of a Holy Mass, presided over by the principal of the school, Rev. Fr. Cyprian Ogu.
Fr. Ogu while delivering his homily enunciated that what makes a perfect student is not only his ability in academic work but also his ability to change to suit new conditions and situations. Sports he said, keeps the student physically fit for studies.
The second segment of the occasion, which is the field events attracted many dignitaries from all walks of life, including the Owerri Municipal Representative, Hon. Victor Mere, Prof. Okey Nwafor, representing the Vice-Chancellor of Imo State University, Prof. A.U. Awuzie, Eze Barr. O.A. Osuebi, the Eshimobi of Azara, the Special Assistant to the Governor on Youth Affairs, Hon. Emma Duru, Dr. Onwusonye who chaired the occasion and several others.
In his opening remarks, the Director, Owerri Archdiocesan Education Commission, Rev. Fr. Victor Eleba stated that the past four years has brought a brighter change in the Catholic schools which government handed back to the church. He applauded the Archbishop, His Grace A..J.V. Obinna for his relentless efforts in upgrading the standard of Catholic schools in the Archdiocese. He encouraged parents who inspite of the free education in ImoState schools, found the Catholic schools worthy of grooming their children. He also made known to the public the Archbishop’s intention of introducing chess and scrabble into the school games, while announcing a one term scholarship to outstanding students in sports.
In his own remarks, Hon. Victor Mere, said he disengaged his other commitment outside the country to attend the inter-house sports because of his love and passion for mission schools. He encouraged and applauded the Owerri Archdiocesan Education Commission for re-orienting students who will in no distant future be the pillars of the country. As a product of Anglican Mission school, Hon. Mere promised to assist the school whenever he is called upon. He awarded scholarship to Laka Johnson who won the junior sack-race, while he made a cash donation to the Blue House.
Prof. Ukachukwu Awuzie, who was represented by Prof. Nwafor said that the ImoStateUniversity has introduced a policy to catch-them-young starting from secondary school levels. According to him, this is why IMSU cannot be less represented in matters concerning secondary schools and especially the mission schools. He also made a cash donation on behalf of the IMSU VC.
The SA to the Governor on Youth Affairs, Hon. Emma Duru interestingly awarded a one-term scholarship to the junior boy who came last in the sack race. He also promised to support the school with sports facilities.
Highlights of the occasion include: sack-race, sprint race, welcome song, match-past, cultural dance and invitation relay race by OwerriGirlsSecondary School, AlvanaModelSecondary School, HolyRosaryInternationalSecondary School, Ikenegbu Girls and GovernmentSecondary School, Owerri.
Rev. Fr Victor Eleba gave the final blessings to the students after which they departed for their mid-term break.
