Man killed in Ehime-Mbano over firewood – Angry mob burns suspect’s house

Three brothers, (names withheld)  who are natives of Umuopara Nsu, Ehime Mbano L.G.A of ImoState are now telling the police all they know about the circumstances leading to the death of a young man, Canice Ajuegbe, a native of Umuduru Nsu on Friday 15th February 2014. The suspects were alleged to have killed Canice with a sharp cutlass.

Trouble started as the three brothers went to fetch firewood from the neighboring Umuduru community. They were accosted by the deceased who wondered why they were hewing firewood from a palm tree that belonged to his parents.

A heated argument ensued which degenerated to a fight. As they engaged themselves in a brawl, one of the three brothers allegedly  pulled a cutlass and landed a deep cut on the forehead of Canice, and he fell down and bled to death.

The trio dragged the victim deep into the bush and took to their heels. They went home and had their bath before proceeding to sell their wares at Ekeikpa Market, Ihitte Uboma L.G.A. They deal on stock fish.

They had no inkling that a little girl, who was also fetching firewood around the precincts of the arena saw them commit the heinous atrocity. She hid herself to avoid harm by the trio.

However, she later squealed the information when it was discovered that the victim was missing.

HRH Eze Chukwubueze Iwunze invited the police from Ehime-Mbano Division and two of the alleged assailants were apprehended while Onyebuchi, their elder brother escaped later surrenderd himself to the police.

On Sunday, a rampaging angry mob from Umuduru Nsu home of the deceased, stormed the Umuopara abode of the assassins.

THE LEADER arrived the scenario and met a raging conflagration decimating their houses. House hold items like: radio, bicycles, foams, TV, Chairs and domestic animals were destroyed by the inferno.

The angry mob was armed with cutlasses, axes, and different forms of dangerous weapons. They chanted war songs and destroyed farms as they moved menacingly with their weapons of death.

THE LEADER met a police patrol team, led by the Divisional Crime Officer as the fire raged  unabatedly. It is note worthy that there is no fire service facility at Ehime Mbano LGA.

THE LEADER went to the Palace of HRH Eze Chukwubueze E. Iwunze, Ebichi 11 of Nsu Autonomous Community at Ndiama Ezeoke, who confirmed the story, but elucidated that he is bitter that the good name of his community was being painted black by the nefarious activities of the assailants.

Ebichi 11, who is also the Chairman of Ehime Mbano Council of Ndieze observed that he has summoned a crucial meeting where the need for peace in his domain was discussed with leaders from the two communities, he said.

Eze Chibueze Iwunze advised the youths from the area to desist from further acts of brigandage as justice will prevail.

At Ehime-Mbano police Division, the D.P.O. Mr. Uguw had reportedly gone to Owerri over the issue.
