Aba Diocese ends Education Week

The Catholic Diocese of Aba has rounded off activities marking this year’s Education Week.  It is the 9th in the series.  The theme for this year was “Catholic Education and Sports”.  The climax of the event took place on February 24 at Christ the King School field.  Rex Aba, the Diocesan newspaper said it was well attended by some priests, parents, teachers and students from Catholic schools in the diocese.

As is customary, the celebration began with a Mass before field events.

In his address titleded, “Catholic Education and Sports”, the Diocesan Education Director, Rev. Fr. Jephthah Asuoha expressed his gratitude to God Almighty and Most Rev. V.V. Ezeonyia (C.S.S.), Bishop of Aba Diocese.  He was also thankful to school administrators, principals, teachers, students and pupils for being supportive and cooperative.

The Education Director went on to enumerate the importance of education week.  According to him, education week offers opportunities of “familiarization and interaction”.  It is also a means of evangelizing the people and celebration of common belief and mission.

He did not fail to remind the audience about the relevance of sports on the education of the child/youth.  He further stated that Catholic education is second to none because it aims at the “integral well being of the human person”.  Fr. Jephthah maintained that Catholic education is not aimed at monetary reward, but is geared towards the combination of sports and other aspects of education both physical and spiritual to build a complete person.

His speech was followed by track and field events comprising football and sprints.  CKC emerged victorious in male football.  They edged out St. Michael’s Secondary School via penalty.  St. Joseph’s College beat Seat of Wisdom Secondary School by a lone goal to clinch the female football cup.

Our Saviour Girls secondary School emerged overall best by virtue of having the highest number of awards/prizes.
