Sports, opportunity to ease academic pressure – Principal

-As St. Columba’s College Amaimo   marks Inter-house Sports

Sporting activity in school system has been described as a veritable extra-curriculum activity which provides opportunity for students to ease off the tension of academic pressure.

Rev. Fr. Betrand Ujunwa, Principal, St. Columba’s College Amaimo, Ikeduru LGA, stated this on the occasion of the school maiden inter-house sports marked at the school’s sporting arena, Friday, February 28, 2014.

The sporting festival, which was competitively anchored on four houses, namely: Blue, Red, White and Yellow, featured football competition, march past, track events, long/high jump, calisthenics, cultural dance etc.

Among those who graced the occasion were HRH Eze Godwin Ehirim Nwebo, Duruimo II of Amaimo Ancient Kingdom, Chief Vitalis Orikaeze Ajumbe, Hon. Sam Daddy Anyanwu and some members of Owerri Archdiocesan  Education Board led by Fr. Henry Ajaero and Sir Laz Ugochukwu.

In a welcome address, Fr. Ujunwa expressed joy for the event which he said was the first since the return of schools to the original owners.  He described inter-house sports as a unifying factor which inculcates the spirit of team work, hard work, endurance, resilience and determination into students.  He charged the students to take the exercise serious, stressing that it would help them discover, harness and develop their talents.  “I wish to encourage you to put in your best and try to draw some life lessons from these sporting activities”.

The principal commended the efforts of those who through their kind gesture facilitated the success of the event.  He reminded his guests that the intention of the management to host a qualitative sporting event where the students would be exposed into various facets of sports would not be actualized without the provision of sporting events like javelin, short put, discus etc.  He urged good spirited individuals to join hands in giving the school a face lift.

In a remark, the Chairman of the occasion, Chief Ajumbe who was elated with the structural transformation going on in the school thanked the principal and staff for their show of hard work and dedication to duty.  He urged them not to relent in their endeavour in making sure that the society is filled with students of sound moral and intellectual character.

Commending the free education in Imo State, Chief Ajumbe who made some donations including a computer set to the school, pleaded with the state government to dispose its mind for effective collaboration with the church.

He expressed optimism that when this happens, education in the state would be restored back to its former glory.

Some students in a brief chat at the end of the event described their experience as wonderful, saying they were privileged to have witnessed such epoch-making event as students.  They thanked the invited schools for showcasing spirit of sportsmanship and congratulated the Red House for being the overall winner with four gold and four silver medals.
