Church not place to ”seek notice” – Priest warns Catholics

A Church is a place of worship and not a discotheque or social club where people come to show-off the latest fashion in town.

Rev. Fr. Andrew Nkwocha

The Administrator of Maria Assumpta Cathedral Owerri, Rev. Fr. Andrew Nkwocha, gave the warning in his sermon on Sunday.

The priest regretted that many come to church ”to seek notice,” to show-off, warning that those who behave that way waste their time.

Making reference to the readings, which urged Christians to ”seek the kingdom of God first,” Fr. Nkwocha noted that many youths, including young Christian mothers want to enjoy themselves first and serve God later.

”Instead of using their youthful energy to serve God, they dissipate it on fornication, adultery and other forms of immorality and crime,” waiting to be born again later.  Some even give excuse that they are still training their children and so do not have time for church activities.

Making reference to a popular music by late Oliver De Coque,  ” Ka anyi birinwe ndu, anyi birichaa ndu, anya amara ihe anyi ga-eme echi, (Let us enjoy ourselves today and forget tomorrow as it…). The priest cautioned against such dangerous belief, because, according to him, nobody knows when he/she will die as death does not recognize any particular age or time.

Fr. Nkwocha also observed that some people complain that they do not go to church because they do not have ”cloths  or shoes etc.”

“Not that they do not have clothes good-enough for Mass, or other church activities, but they want to wear ”to match,” the latest fashion in town, so that they will distract others in order to be noticed”, the priest added.

He advised against attachment to material things because they are ephemeral, they will perish but the word of God will be there forever.

He challenged Christians to always trust in God no matter the situation, assuring them that those who trust in the Lord will not be afraid.

”Don’t worry unnecessarily, share your burden with the Lord,” he advised.
