Prosecution delay, cause of increased number of inmates

The Deputy Controller of Federal Prisons Aba, Mr. Henry Mazi, has attributed higher number of inmates in the prison yard to delay in the prosecution of cases in courts.

He called on the judicial arm of government in the state to quicken trial processes to avoid keeping of non-convicts in the prison yard longer than necessary.

Mazi, in an interview in Aba, the commercial nerve centre of Abia State, decried the increased number of non-convicts in the Aba Federal Prisons, which he said calls for urgent government attention.

According to him, out of 459 inmates in the prisons, 117 are serving various jail terms, while 342 inmates were still standing trials.

Mazi added that out of 18 female inmates in the yard, only three have been convicted while 15 of them are still awaiting trials, adding that of the 327 male inmates, only 114 are serving their jail terms.

The DCP blamed the slow pace in judicial process to the long list of inmates on the awaiting trial list and suggested that Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP) personnel be assigned to each court as an effective step to ensuring speedy dispensation of justice in Abia State and the country in general.
