Fr. Cloonan Memorial Secondary School Emekuku holds inter-house sports

Sporting activities in the school system have been described as an integral part of the education of the child that helps him to showcase his talents.

Rev. Fr. Dr. Nicholas Nwachukwu, Principal, Fr. Cloonan Memorial Secondary School Emekuku stated this on the occasion of the school maiden inter-house sports marked at Chief Obi Memorial Primary School Emekuku playground, Saturday, March 15, 2014.

As is customary, the celebration began with a Holy Mass before the field events.

The event was graced by many dignitaries including Rev. Fr. Alphonsus Oha, Owerri Archdiocesan Chancellor/Secretary who represented the Archbishop of Owerri, His Grace, Most Rev. A.J.V. Obinna, Comrade Joe Best Ajaero, Gen.-Secretary Nigerian Union of Electricity Workers, HRH Eze Christian A. Nwamarah, Eze Udo II of Azaraubo Autonomous Community Emekuku, Prof. G.O. Onuoha, PTA Chairman, Hon. Osita Mmegwa, who chaired the occasion and many others.

In his welcome address, Fr. Nwachukwu expressed gratitude to those who left all other commitments to honour their invitation.  He described inter-house sports as a program that fosters love, team work and hard work in students.  He charged the students to be committed to the exercise because it will showcase and enhance their talents.  “Inter-house sports builds positive attitude like friendliness, loyalty, self-confidence and respect for others”.

In his opening remarks, the Chairman of the occasion, Hon. Osita Mmegwa started with a minute silence for all the students killed by the Boko Haram insurgence in Yobe, pointing out that the occasion was the third in the series.  He advised the students to shun vices, violence and embrace the anti-gay law.  “Rise on your feet to support the law and do not allow it to happen in your own time”, he said.

The event’s competition anchored on six houses namely: Pink, Red, Blue, White, Yellow and Green.   featured march past, track events, long jump, javelin, cultural dance and relay race by Owerri Girls Secondary School, Holy Rosary International College, Holy Ghost College Owerri, Naze Minor Seminary School, St. Paul’s International School etc.

In his vote of thanks, the Principal, Rev. Fr. Nwachukwu thanked God for good weather, casualty-free and sweet competition.  He thanked in a special way his Vice-Principal, Rev. Fr. Martins Akalesi for his support.  He also extended his gratitude to the staff, students and everyone who in one way or the other contributed to the success of the occasion.

The Pink House emerged overall best by virtue of having the highest number of awards and Ekpe Chidiebere as the best student that won 3 gold in the competition.
