Igboland, hope of Christianity in Nigeria – Fr. Nkwocha

-As Provincial CMO meets in Owerri

Christian Fathers in Igboland have been reminded that the hope of Christianity in Nigeria lies in their hands and should therefore hold on tenaciously to this faith and handover same to their children undiluted.

The Administrator of Maria Assumpta Cathedral Owerri, Rev. Fr. Andrew Nkwocha gave this reminder at the Mass which kick-started the meeting of the Catholic Men Organization (CMO), Owerri Ecclesiastical Province held at Maria Assumpta Cathedral Owerri, Thursday, March 27, 2014.

In his homily, Fr. Nkwocha, who represented Archbishop Anthony Obinna said Christians are suffering serious persecution in many parts of Northern Nigeria, and called on the Christian fathers to make sure that the faith is not threatened in Igboland by ensuring that they hand it over to their children.

While calling for prayers and assistance to our brothers in the North, Fr. Nkwocha further cautioned Christian fathers not to take their faith for granted.  One way to ensure that the faith is rooted is by ensuring that guide and guard their children in the right path so that they do not fall prey to increasing number of Pentecostal sects which are creating divisions in many families.

He told the congregation that those who went on pilgrimage to Jerusalem would attest that there is only one Church – the Holy Catholic Church founded by Christ, because the tradition and programme of activities at the Holy Land are that of the Catholic Church.

“It is a privilege to be a Catholic and so, don’t abuse this advantage”, he further cautioned.

The Administrator also challenged the Christian fathers to co-operate with their leadership at various levels and not to create confusion and division which are likely to distract the leadership and obstruct the work of God.

He also reminded them to lead by example in their families, adding that when the father is on the right track, members of the family will follow suit.

He later introduced the new standardized “Ekpere Nzuko Nso Katolik”, published by the Archdiocese of Owerri for better understanding of the Catholic prayers in Igbo.

Speaking later, the Owerri Provincial Chairman of CMO, Chief Dr. B.N. Nworgu thanked the Archbishop, represented by the Administrator for his reception.    He commended Owerri Archdiocesan CMO for its vibrancy and commitment.

The Provincial Chairman also praised the Catholic Archdiocese of Owewri for publishing a standardized EKPERE NZUKO NSO and called on the Archdiocese to make it available for more Catholics to benefit.

Earlier in his own remark, the President of Owerri Archdiocesan CMO, Sir N.O. Nonyelum, welcomed in a special way the delegates from the various dioceses that make up the provinces and showered praises on Fr. Andrew for his immense support  to CMO in his parish and appealed to other parish priests to emulate him.
