In his homily during the Pontifical concelebrated Mass, the Catholic Archbishop of Owerri, Most Rev. Anthony Obinna warned on what he called “spiritual and moral blindness” and discrimination based social status.  He was assisted at the Mass by the Administrator, Fr. Andrew Nkwocha and Fr. Anumudu.

Reflecting on the gospel of the day, about a man who had been blind from birth, Archbishop Obinna said that lust, beauty or handsomeness can make man blind while wealth, power and high social status have become instrument of oppression.

The prelate noted that because of the current feminist and sexual revolution, some women have gone to the extreme, becoming feminine goddesses and sex symbols.  “They have discovered their beauty and power to seduce men and so they no longer believe that they are handmaids of the Lord”, the Archbishop said.

“We are in era of sexual revolution”, the prelate said, regretting that “our women are elevating human flesh and projecting feminine qualities in a way that displeases God”.

Archbishop Obinna called on Catholic women to be humble and detach themselves from the attractions of this world.

He recommended closer friendship with Christ and Mary as cure for spiritual and moral blindness.

Later in his remarks during a reception, the Chairman of the occasion, Dr. Victor Onukwugha called on mothers to be more proactive in their relationship with politicians.

He decried those he called “political mothers”, who are hired by politicians to sing their praises at political rallies.

Dr. Onukwugha, who is the CEO, Bauhaus Int’l Ltd., commended mothers for their various projects.  However he told them that the most important project they must embark upon now is tackling prostitution and other forms of immorality in Imo State.  He revealed that apart from numerous hotels already existing in Owerri, more than 100 new ones are under construction in the city alone.

“There is a reason for the increasing number of hotels in Imo.  There is a reason why people from various parts of Nigeria come to rest in Imo.   In economics, industries are located close to sources of raw materials.  The raw materials in Imo State are women”.

Earlier in her address, the President Assumpta Parish Catholic Women Organization (CWO), Lady Ruth Duruiheoma laid emphasis on the theme of this year’s Mother’s Day, which is “The Role of Mothers in the Catholic family”.

She called on her fellow women to show good example both at home and society by being prayerful, knowledgeable, discipline and persevering.

“They must bear in mind that the family is a domestic church and should endeavour to teach their children how to practice and live according to the Catholic doctrines like praying the Rosary, attending catechism classes, attending Mass, going to confession regularly etc.

Highlights of the celebration included fund-raising for the CWO projects, unveiling of the Revised CWO Directory and recognition of the Parish CWO Special Friends.
