Bees sting 83-year-old woman to death in Imo

An 83-year-old woman, Mrs. Nwanyiaro Orji of Nchoko Amiri in the Oru East LGA of Imo State has been stung to death by bees.

Information reaching our News Desk say that on that fateful day, March 30, 2014, Mrs. Orji had gone to make use of a pit  latrine which was outside her house, when  all of a sudden, there was a loud sound, people around thought that a ripe pod of the bread fruit tree nearby had dropped. , Little did they know that it was the hive on top of the big bread fruit tree that fell.

The angry bees began to fly around, stinging people including the deceased step-son who was in the kitchen.  The boy left what he was cooking and ran out only to behold his step-mother being mercilessly stung by the bees.  He attempted to drag her away but the frail old woman couldn’t run with him.  To worsen it all, the bees stung them both and he had to helplessly leave his step-mother who couldn’t run with him to save himself.  The old woman was left at the mercy of the bees, which swarmed around her.  Eye witnesses said that she couldn’t even be seen as the bees were so many that they covered her from head to toe where she fell down while trying to run.

The bees stung her for over 20 minute’s non-stop as people ran helter-skelter to save themselves from the stinging bees.  Anyone who tried to save the old woman,  received even more stings.  They started looking for a way out.  Some youths braved it, and ran out to look for an insecticide at the risk of being stung themselves.   They managed to buy the insecticide at the third shop they checked.  When they came back with the insecticide, they tied themselves with clothes from head to toe, leaving only their eyes open, armed with the insecticide.  They sprayed it on her, killing some of the bees and carried her into her house.  After the bees had been dispersed, another youth brought out his motorcycle and conveyed the dying woman to a nearby hospital, Chijindu Hospital.

Anyone who didn’t know her prior to this time would think she was hairy as a result of the bee poison (which were hair-like covering her body).  According to our source, the doctor administered some injections on her to neutralize the poison, while nurses were instructed to remove some of the visible hair-like poison on her skin.

Mrs. Orji died the next day being March 31.  Tragic enough, the woman who was beheaded at Ibiasoegbe on that same day has been identified as Mrs. Orji’s sister-in-law.
