Preaching a homily during the Mass, the Parish Priest, Rev. Fr. Dr. Benedict Oparaugo said that the Sunday marks two occasions comprising the Laetare Sunday and the Mother’s Day.
Fr. Oparaugo explained Laetare as joy, meaning that Christians are enjoined to have courage and rejoice even as they mark the commemoration of the death of our Lord Jesus Christ.
The priest differentiated between the Mother’s Day and Mothering Sunday. He said that Mothering Sunday means: mothers exercising their roles as wives and mothers while Mother’s Day is a day set aside for family members to honour and celebrate their mothers.
The homilist also said that the Mother’s Day stems from the conception of Our Blessed Mother, Virgin May and the feast of Annunciation.
Fr. Oparaugo charged mothers to always live lives worthy of emulation and urged the fathers and children to shower them with love and care.
Presenting an address during the reception that followed, Catholic Women Organization (CWO) President, Mrs. Agnes Anozie thanked God for granting them life to witness this year’s Mother’s Day.
She described the celebration as an annual event that every mother looks forward to, adding that it is an occasion of thanksgiving to God for the gift of motherhood and a period mothers expect celebrations and appreciations from their spouses and children through words, gifts, gestures and even cash.
The CWO President noted the theme of this year’s retreat captioned: The Role of Mothers in the Family” as a good one at the right time, especially now that many families are facing various crisis and challenges.
She urged the women to be agents of stabilization and unification in their various homes and to continue contributing their quota to the growth of the church and society.
She listed some of the achievements of the Parish CWO. Mrs. Anozie announced the procurement of a 22-seater mini bus, their assistance in the opening of the Parish Day Care, Nursery and Primary School, the Church building and its successful inauguration by the Archbishop, Most Rev. Anthony J.V. Obinna among others.
Mrs. Anozie commended all who worked towards the success of the Mother’s Day celebration, especially the Organizing Committee Chairlady, Mrs. Ifeoma Woodman and her members for conducting a hitch-free celebration.
