Soyinka speaks on the recent security threats in Nigeria, says Nigeria needs competent leaders

Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka disclosed that Nigeria needed competent leaders to man the affairs and face the security challenges of the country. He said this in Osogbo on Monday 14th April at a colloquium by Centre for Black Culture and International Understanding – CBCIU where he was a guest speaker on Fundamental Imperatives of Cohabitation, Faith and Secularism organized by the group.

 

Soyinka maintained that the security challenges of Nigeria could not be solved by prayers but by effective leadership by strong leaders who deal with situations like insecurity without partisanship. He continued that Boko Haram insurgency should not be mistaken for a religious war.

 

In his speech, Soyinka said: ”I have never said prayer can help resolve the security challenges facing Nigeria.

“I believe the situation must be tackled without partisanship and all these uninformed comments cannot help the situation.

“We should wake up to the reality. Nigeria is in war and only competency can solve the problem, not prayers.”
He recommended that Nigerians and her leaders should learn from the history of nations that has faced security situations and implements same method in combating security threats and called on the concerned authorities to arrest the situation, citing the recent Nyanya-Abuja motor park bomb blast which he received with great shock as a reference.

 

Still at the event, Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola emphasized the need for people to accommodate others’ religions, said the only way to respect God was by showing respect to human beings.
