Drama in Enugu as INEC card reader fails to function

There was a mild drama on Wednesday at the Enugu office of the Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) when the card reader for accreditation failed to function, raising further doubts about preparations ahead the elections.

The drama started when the Resident Electoral Commission (REC), Prof. Chukwuemeka Onukaogu, who took time to explain INEC’s preparation for the conduct of elections in the state to show newsmen how the card reader would be used during accreditation.

For the next 30 minutes the machine, which was being tested on the staff of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), failed to identify and authenticate that he was the owner of the voter card he produced.

The machine that confirmed that the card in question was issued by INEC, failed to recognize the fingerprints of the journalist which would enable the machine display personal information of the bearer to determine if he was the real owner of the card.
