Activities marking the 2015 Feast of Immaculate Heart of Mary have ended with Holy Mass at the Claretians Missionary Headquarters, Area A, World Bank Housing Estate, New Owerri, Imo State, June 13, 2015.
The Claretians have a special devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary as their full title is MISSIONARY SONS OF THE IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY but they are popularly known as the Claretians.
In his homily, the Provincial Superior of the Claretian Missionary Fathers (CMF), Rev. Fr. Simeon Nwobi noted that parents could scare away their children by their attitudes. Citing Mary’s reaction to Jesus when she found him in the temple instead of at home, Fr. Nwobi said most mothers of today would have given him a big slap before any other thing. He warned that cursing and beating don’t change children but scare them, and advised parents to treat their children with love and understanding.
“The Immaculate Heart of Mary is a heart that is love and also a heart that cares and protects”, the Superior preached.
Fr. Nwobi opined that the family is the foundation of a society, adding that, if we want change we should start from the family. He noted with regret that people want change but, they don’t want to change themselves.
The Provincial Superior frowned at the attitude of mothers who go to school to fight their children’s teachers, thinking they are protecting their children but according to him, they end up destroying them.
He advised mothers to always know what their children are doing and also supervise them. “Use this year’s Immaculate Heart celebration and review how much time you give to your family”, he advised. In his words, “Let us go back to Mary and learn how to be a mother and how to bring up our children in the fear of God and how to bring them closer to God”.
The Mass was presided over by the Provincial Superior, assisted by Frs: Ethelbert Amaku, Kenneth Oguejiofor, and many other Claretian priests.
After the Mass, Rev. Fr. Perpetus Igwe thanked God for the gift of Virgin Mary. He also thanked the Archbishop of Owerri Archdiocese and those who lectured during the retreat and everybody that contributed to the success of the occasion and prayed God to bless them.
The celebration brought together many Claretian priests, brothers, sisters, seminarians and lay members.
Highlights of the feast were the renewal of consecration to Immaculate Heart of Mary, burning of petitions, drama, cultural dance and cutting of Our Lady’s cake.
