Monarch kidnapped in Rivers, rescued in Imo


 – Police kill three suspects

Three of the suspected kidnappers of a 75-year-old paramount ruler of Ubomini community in Emohua Local Government Area of Rivers State, His Royal Highness, Idi Igwe Matthias, have been killed by operatives of the Anti-kidnap Unit (AKU) of the Rivers State Police Command.
Also, the septuagenarian was rescued on Monday, at about 11:31pm, by the AKU operatives in Umuapu, Ohaji Local Government Area of Imo State.
Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the State, Ahmad Muhammad, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), who briefed journalists on the development, said the kidnap victim was abducted on May 28, 2016, by a gang of five armed men.
Muhammad said the gunmen stormed the paramount ruler’s palace dressed in military camouflage and whisked him away.
According to him, the bandits were tracked down to their hideout in Umuapu, where there was a gun duel between the gang and policemen, leading to the death of three kidnappers.
He said the victim has since been released to his family members.
Also, the PPRO disclosed that policemen on Tuesday shot dead five kidnap/robbery suspects around Elele Prison Farm, in Ikwerre Local Government Area.
Muhammad said their men stormed the area after a distress call, adding that the deceased were killed during shootout.
Items recovered during the two operations were AK47 rifle, two special rifles and three locally-made (cut-sized) guns, as well as ammunition.
