One of the prime suspects in the abduction and killing of Colonel Samalia Inusa has recounted how the crime was committed. the Sun reports.
Recall that the Colonel was abducted in the presence of his wife and son on March 26 at the NNPC junction in Kaduna State and his decomposing body found two days after.
A suspect, Emeka Okeke said there was no intention to kill the army colonel as they only wanted to snatch his car.
He said the army officer snatched the gun from him and started struggling with him. During the fight, the colonel got shot as one bullet was already in the panel.
Emeka disclosed that they went away with the man’s vehicle and sold it for N800,000.
“One Sunday evening, we were on patrol; any vehicle we saw, we would snatch. It was in the process that we saw Colonel Inusa’s car from Police College coming down to Refinery Junction where we collected the car.
“Immediately, we handed over the car to Dan-Sokoto and he took it away. Thereafter, we took him to Abuja By-Pass. I asked him to lie down and relax his mind because we were only interested in the car, not his life.
“I told him; you are bigger than this car, and can afford to buy another car”. Shortly after, he said he wanted to drink water, so, I went to the car to bring pure water for him. As I bent down to give him water, the man snatched the gun from me and quickly removed the magazine.
‘But one bullet was already in the panel. He was holding the gun butt and I was holding the mouth. So, we were dragging the gun. At a point, the gun was facing me and he attempted to pull the trigger, but I succeeded in turning the gun to his direction. He pulled the trigger and fired himself.
‘I told him, we didn’t want to kill you, but you have killed yourself now. But, that man nearly killed me.’ When asked about the whereabouts of other gang members at the time he was struggling with the Colonel, the 44-year-old Mr. Okeke said “They all ran away”
‘We didn’t know he was a military officer. It was a week after we killed the colonel we started reading on the pages of newspapers and on social media that the man we killed was a senior military officer. We specialized in car snatching, we are not kidnappers,’ he said.
The Kaduna State police command in collaboration with the Inspector General of Police Intelligence Response Team had tracked down and arrested four men suspected to have abducted and murdered the colonel. They are Emeka Okeke, Precious Ebele, Ibrahim Kabir, Chidioke Opehi and one Dan Sokoto now at large.
Meanwhile, Senior Magistrate Court 1, sitting in Kaduna, on Tuesday, ordered the suspected killers of Colonel Inusa Samaila to be reprimanded in prison custody till July 21, 2016.
The chief Magistrate Emmanuel Yusuf said he does not have the right to charge them but to refer the case to the appropriate quarters.
“I don’t have the right to charge you. I am just to let you understand the allegation leveled against you and advise the Chief Judge of Kaduna State.
“This case is hereby adjourned till July 21, 2016 for hearing while the accused be remanded in prison” the court ordered.
Counsel to police, Kenneth Dika, said that the suspects would be charged for criminal conspiracy, illegal possession of firearms, kidnapping and culpable homicide, all which are punishable under criminal laws.
