Orlu Diocese: Regina Pacis Regional CYON holds 2016 cultural fiesta


The Catholic Youth Organization of Nigeria (CYON) Regina Pacis Region, on Saturday, October 15, 2016 celebrated their 2016 cultural festival at Regina Pacis Parish Ihioma, Orlu L.G.A.

Delivering a homily during the Holy Mass, the Regional Chaplain, Very Rev Fr. Augustine Iwuagwu said that the Catholic Church is not against the tradition of Igbo culture, but Christianizes any fetish part of it. “In Catholic Church, there is room for everything except selfishness”, he stated.

The Chaplain pointed out that Igbo culture has a lot to teach the younger ones, stressing that Catholic youths in Orlu Diocese always celebrate this cultural fiesta which he said is a way of bringing them together as well as promoting Igbo cultural heritage. He stated that parishes will compete in cultural dances in order to bring out their best, adding that competition in the Church is not like in other organizations.

”Competition in the Church is a system of bringing out the best in both the product and the producer. Therefore, whichever parish that comes first, other competitors should accept the outcome. According to Fr. Iwuagwa the event was also aimed at teaching the youths Igbo cultural attire and other activities. He pointed out that the Catholic Youth Organization of Nigeria is an association that unites the Catholic youths to every young Catholic must identify with.

Fr. Iwuagwu frowned at the fact that most parents are responsible for the poor attitude of their children towards Igbo language by failing to teach them during their childhood. In an address he read, the Regional CYON President, Ezinwa Justin Okereke said that the event comes up every two years and brings together all the parishes within the region as a way of promoting Igbo culture. He added that culture is a way of life with which ethnic groups can be identify.

The President pointed out that due to the economic challenge facing the country, everyone should embark on agriculture, including the youths in order to boost the economy of the nation. Ezinwa Okereke appealed for support for the Organization to procure a bus and musical instrument to enable members carry out their evangelical work. In his remarks, the Transition Committee Chairman for Orsu L.G.A, Hon. PeterClinton Ihejiagwa commended the youths and the Organizing Committee for the honour done him.

Hon. Ihejiagwa stated that he does not accept awards from any group or organization but agreed to accept this one because it came from the youths. “I am also a youth and support whatever good thing the youths are doing”. He advised them to shun any act capable of truncating their bright future but engage themselves in positive things that will bring good name to their families and the society at large. The Secretary Organizing Committee, Comr. Udechi Francis Jnr thanked all who graced the occasion as well as other Committee members for making the event a successful one

The event featured cultural dance competition, coronation of Igwe Chukwudi Okereke as “Igwe Regina Pacis CYON” by the Prime Minister of Orlu, Barr. P.I Achi. Dignitaries at the event included priests, parents and others who are conversant with culture and tradition.
