Electricity: NERC commissions customer complaints forum office in Owerri

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission NERC on Wednesday, November 9, 2016, commissioned its customer forum office at Exclusive Garden by Achike Udenwa Estate Owerri Imo State, to help in addressing complaints of electricity consumers in the state.

The Acting Chairman/CEO, NERC, Dr. Anthony Akah, while speaking at the commissioning/induction of the forum members stressed that the opening of the customer complaints forum office could not have come at a better time than now that customers within the EEDC Network are facing a myriad of challenges including  worrisome safety records occasioned by 5 injuries and 14 deaths investigated by the commission in 2016 alone, the issue of high estimated billing as a result of inadequate metering and a poor compliance record by EEDC and over 2466 unresolved electricity complaints, describing them as unacceptable statistics and safety record.

Dr. Anthony Akah, while congratulating the new forum members, said the growth and development of the electricity sector is a joint responsibility of the operators and the customers and therefore customer complaints forum would further promote such relationship.

In his remark, the MD/CEO of EEDC, Engr Srinivas Jayaraman represented by Head of Regulatory EEDC, Mr. Everistus Chijioke Ogboh described this forum office as pivotal requirement in regulating electricity market, and improving the relationship between the distribution company and the customers.

He beckoned on the consumers to make use of this forum office which will in turn improve and strengthen their relationship with EEDC.

The president of MAN (Manufacturers Association of Nigeria) ably represented by Barr Anyanwu in his remark thanked NERC for providing this wonderful opportunity where consumers and distributors can interact. He said there had been a lot of complaints from MAN members and their consumers on the activities of EEDC and therefore happy that a platform has been provided where all these complaints can be channeled.

Highlight of the occasion included the commissioning of the new forum office by Acting MD/CEO Dr. Anthony Akah and also the inauguration of the forum members who are representatives of all the customer classes, industrial, commercial as well as professional bodies drawn from within Owerri and its environs.

The members include; Engr Mrs. Kosisochukwu J. Nwaoko – (NSE); Nigerian Society of Engineers/Chairman of the forum, Mr. Samuel Chidi Ogboji (Customer Complaints Handling Standards and Procedures CPC), Godwin M. Iheanacho (MAN), Dr. Christian Igwe (NACCIMA), Chief Nwariwe Hipolite Ifeanyi – NGOs and Afaoma Ubaru – Forum Secretary.
