Mother Maria Assumpta celebrates Golden Jubilee of Profession

Friends and well wishers gathered at St. Joseph Camelite Monastery, Wetheral Road Owerri, Imo State, on 29th October, 2016, to celebrate the Golden Jubilee Anniversary of the Religious Profession of, Rev. Mother Maria Assumpta of the Holy Angels, OCD.

The golden jubilee celebration commenced with a pontifical thanksgiving Mass presided over by the Owerri Metropolitan Archbishop, His Grace, Anthony J.V. Obinna, assisted by numerous priests from various dioceses.

In his homily, Archbishop Obinna gave God the glory for the gift of life and grace showered on the jubilarian, Mother Maria Assumpta from her novitiate to the present stage in the Lord’s vineyard. He disclosed that the celebrant was one of the pioneer founding members of Carmelite Monastery, with Owerri as their first branch.

Archbishop Obinna further said that the monastery was able to thrive due to the instrumentality and devotedness of Mother Assumpta, the Mother Prioress, adding that presently, the Monastery has branches in different places, and is growing according to the dictates of God and the footsteps of their founding members.

In appreciation, Mother Maria Assumpta full of praises to God, said she was celebrating God’s unconditional love, mercy and goodness. She extended her pleasantries to the clergy, religious, family members and the congregation for being pillars of support in the service of God and humanity. She however prayed for God’s continued blessings, good health, while she reassured them of her unceasing prayers.

Goodwill messages came from various groups and individuals including the Apostolic Nuncio to Nigeria, Archbishop Augustine Kasujja, the Chancellor/Secretary of Owerri Archdiocese, Rev. Fr. Dr. Alphonsus Oha, the Vicar, Order of Discalced Carmelites, Vicariate of Nigeria, Very Rev. Fr. Canice-Mary Azuoma, OCD, Rev. Msgr. Kevin Akagha of St. Mark’s Parish New Owerri, Rt. Rev. Msgr. Theo Nwalo of Ahiara Diocese and the brother of the jubilarian, Rev. Fr. Philip Igbo cmf.

A native of Enyiogugu Mbaise, Mother Maria Assumpta OCD was born Theresa Chinedu Igbo. she joined the Carmelite order in Dublin, Ireland in 1965 inspite of objections, discouragement from friends and relations and attractions of the world. In 1966 she made her simple profession and solemn perpetual vows three years later.

Highpoint of the occasion was cutting of the golden jubilee cake and presentation of jubilee candle, staff and crown to the jubilarian by Archbishop Obinna.
