The Imo State branch of the United Progressives Party – UPP, has chided Governor Owelle Rochas Okorocha for his recent attack against the revered Catholic cleric, His Grace, Most Rev. Anthony Obinna, who is also the Archbishop of Owerri Catholic Archdiocese.
Speaking in reaction to the altercation between the Governor and the Archbishop, the party recalled that Okorocha once rode on the back of the highly respected and out spoken prelate to power and wondered why he never realized that the Archbishop was playing partisan politics until recently when the prelate advised the Governor to “rule with a human face and endeavour to pay pensioners most of who have since died while waiting for the payment of the accumulated arrears of their two years pension.”
These were contained in a communiqué signed by Hon. Dr. C.D Egbuchulam as the state Chairman on behalf of the party and made available to Community Watch Dog, an Owerri based Newspaper.
The release condemned the unprovoked, unwarranted invectives unleashed on the Archbishop by Governor Okorocha. and advised the governor to avoid the wrath of God by apologizing to Archbishop Obinna since no one has fought the Altar of God and gone scoot free.
According to Watch Dog Newspaper, “UPP condemned a situation where the Governor owed pensioners for over two years only to coerce them into accepting a paltry 40% of the monthly pension for 11 months instead of arrears of two years and accused the Governor of appropriating the balance of 60% for over two years with which he has continued to live ostentatious life style, driving in the most expensive cars, keeping the longest convoy and building mansions and edifices at both Lagos, Owerri and Abuja”.
The party accused him of misplacing the people’s mandate and their welfare by embarking on white elephant and substandard projects that have virtually collapsed within its first year after completion. The party therefore described the Governor’s more than five years rule in Imo State as “very close to the rule of Satan in Hades”. “We cannot tolerate such outbursts coming from a Governor who has succeeded in throwing his goodwill to the dogs by distancing all right thinking and patriotic individuals and stake holders from what ought to be a participatory democracy, thus assuming a larger than life image as if knowledge and superior ideals reposite exclusively in him”.
UPP then advised the Governor against ignoring their wise counsel saying, “You claim to be a Catholic, meanwhile, you operate your own Church with no apostolic tradition claiming to be the leader of Christians in Imo State. What a sacrilege, you must quickly atone for these to avoid self destruction.”
