Imo youths brainstorm on skills for Oil and Gas Industry
The Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board held a one-day brainstorming. sensitization workshop for youths in Okigwe Zone on Friday December 23 2016 at Ehime Mbano Council Hall.
Topics meticulously delivered at the event include; Relevant skills in Oil and Gas and how to acquire them, presented by Sir Egbuchulam Obinna; How host Communities and Youths can benefit from the Oil and Gas Industry Content Development Act 2010 by Prof. Samuel Ezeanyika and Mandate of the Board and its Capacity Building Activities delivered by Dr. Francis Olisa.
In an address by Engr. Simbi Kesiye Wabote, Executive Secretary of the Nigeria Content Development and Monitoring Board represented by Dr. Ginah 0. Ginah, General Manager, Branch Coordination, and Board Project, he postulated that the workshop is primarily designed to intimate young Nigerians seeking information on how to get actively involved in the Oil and Gas Industry through human capacity development with goals and visions of empowering the youths of Nigeria through Local content Act. Over Seven hundred youths participated in the semimar.
According to him, the Board has consistently emphasised that the Nigeria Content Policy is about domiciliation of work and development of Local Capacity with the associated benefits not indigenization. He posited that “under the Nigerian Content Human Capital Development Framework, thousands of young Nigerians have-been trained and attached to—various-projects in the Oil and Gas Sector to gain requisite industry experience and ultimately gain permanent employment”, he said. The core values of the Board is to propagate patriotism, professionalism, passion for handwork, integrity, creativity and promoting team. spirit, he said.
Presenting his paper on, “Relevant skills in the Oil and Gas Industry and how to acquire them, Sir Obinna Egbuchulam of SEMB Owerri posited that skills can be acquired in the areas of Industrial welding, Pipe fitting, Driving, Scaffolding, Electrical Technician, Mechanist, Diving, Crane Operation, Safety duties and security among others”. He classified the activities in Oil and Gas to include: Upstream, Midstream and Downstream Sector. According to him; the upstream relates with the discovery and drilling of wells for raw materials from underground… He described the midstream as operations linking the upstream with the downstream activities.
He elucidated that downstream operations include refineries and marketing as processed crude oil which include gasoline, fuel, oil, aviation fuel and petroleum based products are dispensed to users and marketers. The unique event was graced by Hon. Chike Orjiako, T.C Chairman of Ehime-Mbano, LGA, HRH Eze S.C. Okeke, (Eze Chimere), Sir Ijeoma Onumonu, Zonal Coordinator Abia/Imo States and Dr. Ginah 0. Ginah General Manager, Branch Coordinator and Board Project.
Hundreds of youths drawn from various communities in Imo State who attended the event were encouraged to acquire skills and shun laziness, militancy, kidnapping and other debilitating vices.
