Prof. Ukachukwu Aloysius Awuzie hails from Umuzike in Orlu L.G.A of Imo State. He had his Primary School Education at St. Martins Primary School Owerri –Ebeiri where he came out with DISTINCTION in his First School Leaving Certificate in 1962. He attended Secondary School at Bishop Shanahan College, Orlu and had Division One Distinction, 1970.
He proceeded to University of Nigeria Enugu Campus where he studied Architecture and came out with Second Class Honors Upper Division in 1978.After undergraduate studies, Prof. Awuzie then proceeded to the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, USA, where he obtained a Masters Degree in Landscape Architecture.
In his education, Awuzie was a recipient of Umuzike Town Union Scholarship and the defunct Isu County Council Scholarship for his Secondary Education. As well, Awuzie had Federal Government Scholarships for his Undergraduate and Graduate studies. At the University of Nigeria, he was a 1973 Foundation Scholar, being the best first year student in the Faculty of Engineering for the 1972/73 Academic Session. At the University of Massachusetts, he was a recipient of the University’s scholarship for Academic Excellence.
Prof. Ukachukwu Aloysius Awuzie has held many administrative and academic positions. He has been Head of Department, Dean of Faculty, Director of Academic Planning and served in many administrative panels. He has been Member of the Governing Council of the old (Uturu) and current (Owerri) Imo State University.
He has been an active Trade Unionist, having served the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) in the following capacities and for two terms of two years each:
Chairman, ASUU, IMSU branch – 2000 – 2004
National Financial Secretary – 2004 – 2008
National President, ASUU – 2008 – 2012
His regime as ASUU President witnessed the construction of a befitting ASUU Secretariat at University of Abuja, prudent management of the Union’s resources, the change of Education Tax Fund (ETF) to Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND), the establishment of NEEDS ASSESSMENT PROJECTS in Nigerian Universities, the elongation of service period of all Tertiary Institutions staff in Nigerian Tertiary Institutions from 60 to 65 years and for Professors, 70 years. Awuzie was an active member of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and served as the Chairman of its Constitution Review Committee, 2011.
During his tenure as the Vice – Chancellor of Imo State University, the University witnessed massive transformation in terms of infrastructure and in the areas of discipline, accountability and prudence. He single handedly attracted N200,000,000.00 (Two Hundred Million Naira)for the construction and furnishing of the Information Communication Technology (ICT) centre in Imo State University and the construction of an internal link road from the NDDC Hostel to the old Law Faculty block at the University.
Professor Awuzie is the First (1st) Professor of Landscape Architecture in Nigeria, a Fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Architects(fnia). He is also a Fellow of the Society of Landscape Architects of Nigeria (fslan); and member, International Federation of Landscape Architects (mifla).
Professor Ukachukwu Awuzie is a member of many Socio – Cultural and Development Organisations like Circle 78, Orluzurumee, Rotary Club International; the Imo State Coordinator for theNational Working Committee Alaigbo Development Foundation (ADF) 2015 – Date. He was likewise the Coordinator Imo/Abia Eastern Mandate Union (EMU) 1995 – 1999; member, Oganihu – Isu, etc. He has played and continues to play different roles in the Church and is a recipient of many awards from the Catholic church and the Anglican Communion, students and professional organizations. He is a 4th (Fourth) Degree Knight of the Knights of St. Mulumba, (KSM) Nigeria.
As an Academic, he has published in International and National Journals and participated in many conferences, workshops and seminars.
He is cited by the Champion Newspaper on its ICON PAGE of November, 2009 as MAN OF CHARACTER; and in the special report of “Igbos of Distinction” Part I in Sunday Guardian Newspaper, page 33 of 30thJune, 2013. He was also cited in the American Bibliographic Index 2005 of WHO IS WHO IN THE PROFESSIONS; cited in Excel African Magazine as the April 2013 OUTSTANDING VICE – CHANCELLOR of the month and in the 2014 American Bibliographic Index of WHO IS WHO IN LEADERSHIP.
Currently he is the Chairman of the Planning and Implementation Committee of the Proposed Trinitas University (Orlu Catholic Diocese), and a recipient of many Chieftaincy Title Awards.
He is married to Nneoma Lady Ethel-Rose Ucheoma Awuzie and the marriage is blessed with Five (5) children and they are all doing well.
