Succour came the way of 40 select women drawn from Umuonyia and Umuoparalum in Umualumaku Umueze Autonomous Community, Ehime Mbano LGA of Imo State as an NGO “Women and Children Development Initiative” under Dr. Tessy Ugo Madu, Executive Director, equipped them with diverse skills and technical knowhow on soap making processes (liquid and bar) and techniques in pomade/cream manufacturing.
The women also received tutelage from quality resource persons on how to make Dettol, Insecticides, Izal, Vaseline and Cream production. They were also trained on modern farming methods.
Speaking to The Leader after providing the trainees with financial incentives, improved cassava stems and orange-vine sweet potatoes, the Executive Director of the organization, Dr. Tessy Ugo Madu posited the activities, formation and philosophy behind the Non-Governmental Agency revolves around developing the ‘Total Woman’ and improvement on the human capacity development and enhanced living standards of families, especially the welfare of children and female gender. Dr. Madu harped on the exigency of empowering women through education and training to enable them actualize their great potentials and prospects.
She disclosed that she built and equipped a library for Boys Model Secondary School Umualumaku with support from Shell Petroleum. According to her, the gesture is geared towards enhancing reading culture of students towards enhancing their academic pursuit as well as improving teachers proficiency. Dr. Tessy Ugo Madu said that the current efforts of Women and children Development initiative were aimed at empowering women with quality training and skills on modern farming techniques and value addition to roots and tuber crops. According to her, the 40 beneficiaries were empowered with support from VGIF based in America.
The training programmes which began late 2017 was concluded on Sunday July, l5 2018 with distribution of financial support incentives, improved cassava stems and sweat potatoes. She said that selection of participating trainees was managed by the Home and Abroad Women of Umualumaku Umueze who ensured judicious spread of the various segments of the community.
Speaking on what motivated her involvement into the exercise, according by to her, the bitter experience she witnessed diary the Biafra war with the attendant sufferings and malnutrition of children and women who suffered kwashiorkor and were the most vulnerable. The practical oriented concerted training seasons with diverse resource persons also digressed into acquisition social skills geared towards letting the women know their rights towards giving voice to the women in a male dominated chauvinistic society.
Dr. Madu implored the affluent members of the society to join hands with the organization so that more women will benefit in future programmes.
