Insecurity rises in Imo

– Catholic priest killed

– Police Sergeant murdered

Insecurity is mounting yet again in Imo State, as the twin murders of a Catholic priest and a police sergeant, in separate attacks, have both shocked and frightened people.

On Monday evening in the Nkwere Local Government Area, gunmen killed Rev Fr. Jude Egbom, the priest in charge of St Patrick’s Catholic Parish, Amucha, in Njaba LGA, throwing the state, church and community into mourning.

Less than 24 hours after the murder of Fr. Egbom, a similar incident occurred at the busy Control Post, entrance to Owerri, where gunmen, unbelievably, shot and killed a police officer, taking away his rifle.
Sergeant Christian Nnamani was shot by gunmen who were allegedly fleeing from a robbery scene, somewhere. They killed Nnamani, took his official weapon – AK 47, and also shot a passerby who witnessed the incident and is now in hospital.

On Thursday, the police arrested and paraded the suspected killers of Fr. Jude namely, Chigozie Uzoukwu, 33 and Peter Ochokwu, 21. Commissioner of Police Dasuki Galadanchi said the suspects were nabbed in Nkwere, a day after Fr. Egbom’s death. He said the police tactical units also recovered the deceased’s vehicle and travelling bag.

According to the Commissioner, one of the suspected killers, Ozoukwu, is an ex convict who had spent one year in the Owerri prison for armed robbery.

Speaking about the murder of Fr. Jude, a classmate and fellow priest said he was saddened by the news, which he described as heartbreaking.

“I woke up this morning to the heartbreaking news that Fr. Jude Egbom was shot dead. Fr. Egbom was my classmate. He was an incredible priest; a pastor whose passion plus charisma in building any community he has been assigned was outstanding. This is a terrible and sad day for my diocese of Orlu, my classmates, Orlu priests and most especially the Egbom family.” he said, asking for prayers for God to console the Egbom family, the bishop and all the priests of Orlu diocese.

Also reacting to Fr. Egbom’s murder, another priest said he was devastated; “My heart bleeds! Fr. Jude Egbom killed, just like that? Vibrant, humorous, joyful, charismatic, future-focused man! This is getting out of hands. Wickedness threatens the Nigerian land. Evil is fighting us everywhere. Whether this is an attack against the church, a personal attack or calculated assassination, this is very heart-breaking. I weep.”

The circumstances surrounding Fr Egbom’s death are still unfolding. Whether he was a victim of violent roadside robbery or an assassination is yet to be established.

It should, however, be recalled that another Catholic priest was murdered in the same Orlu last year. Rev. Father Cyriacus Onunkwo who came home from overseas to bury his father, was abducted and killed.

In July this year, Sunny Ejiagwu, alias “Ohanaeza,” APC Chairman for Ideato North, was similarly murdered along Akowa road, also in Orlu LGA.

Another priest exclaimed “So sad a news! Who did a priest offend? Evil generation. The murder of another priest in Orlu diocese is still incredible for my of the priests in the Archdiocese of Owerri – Owerri province.
