Manchester United vs Chelsea: Michael Owen predicts EPL clash

[ad_1]

Former Manchester United and Liverpool striker, Michael Owen has predicted victory for Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City, saying they will beat Leicester City 3-1 in Monday’s Premier League fixture.

He also tipped Chelsea to beat Watford 2-1 in Sunday’s Premier League fixture.

According to him, Arsenal will defeat Brighton 4-0 on Sunday, while Manchester United will also defeat Huddersfield Town 2-0 on Sunday.

Owen, however, predicted that Liverpool will beat Newcastle United 2-0 on Saturday night in the Premier League fixture.

Owen told BetVictor: “City know the Premier League is now theirs to lose after excellent wins at Old Trafford and Turf Moor but “there’s many a slip twixt cup and lip” and Pep Guardiola will have to guard against complacency for the visit of Leicester City. Leicester are looking to do the double over City having come from behind to win 2-1 at the King Power in the reverse fixture back in December.

“Former Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers would love to do his old club a favour and the Foxes did pick up a point at Anfield earlier in the season. City are chasing a 13th successive league win and I feel they will travel to Brighton on the closing day of a memorable season top of the table but still needing a win to retain their title. Manchester City 3-1 Leicester City.”

On the Chelsea vs Watford game, Owen said: “Chelsea cannot afford any slip-ups against the FA Cup Finalists as they look to maintain their place in the top four. The game comes in the middle of Chelsea’s Europa League semi-final ties with Eintracht Frankfurt which gives the west London outfit a second string to their Champions League qualification bow.

“Chelsea are unbeaten in their last 11 home games with Watford in all competitions and I feel they will do enough to keep the points against the Hornets. Chelsea 2-1 Watford.”

Speaking on Arsenal vs Brighton game, Owen said: “Brighton have lost all 11 of their Premier League away games by an aggregate score of 2-23 against the ‘big six’ sides, and it is hard to make a case for them at the Emirates on Sunday. The Gunners were in Europa League action against Valencia on Thursday, but they cannot take their eye off the ball as they look to end the campaign in the top four.

“The Seagulls’ point against Newcastle last weekend is likely to preserve their Premier League status, but they are without a win in their last seven. Arsenal are hardly in a rich vein of form themselves, having lost their last three league games, but they should sign-off their home league campaign in style. Arsenal 4-0 Brighton.”

Commenting on the Huddersfield vs Man United, Owen said: “United have failed to win any of their last four games but I can’t see them slipping up at the John Smith’s Stadium. The Terriers have only scored nine home league goals this term and no side in top-flight history has failed to reach double figures.

“I thought United improved on their performances of recent weeks at home to Chelsea last weekend and they must pick up maximum points in West Yorkshire if they are to have any chance of reaching the top four. Their destiny is out of their own hands but all they can do is pick up maximum points in their last couple of games. Huddersfield Town 0-2 Manchester United.”

On the Newcastle vs Liverpool game, Owen said: “Liverpool have it all to do as they try and overturn a three-goal deficit from the 1st leg of their Champions League semi-final with Barcelona midweek, but they cannot get ahead of themselves and must win at St James’ Park on Saturday as they try and keep the pressure on Manchester City in the race for the Premier League title.

“The Reds were, arguably, unlucky not to find the back of the Barca net on at least one occasion midweek but they can’t afford to feel sorry for themselves. I expect Jurgen Klopp to have them fired up for the trip to a Newcastle side who did, of course, beat City 2-1 at home earlier in the season. The Magpies have only lost one of their last six home league games against the Reds and won’t go down without a fight, but I feel it would be fitting this season if the title race went right down to the wire. Newcastle United 0-2 Liverpool.”

Tennis: Djokovic confirms US Open participation

Novak Djokovic confirmed on Thursday he will play at the US Open, ending speculation about his presence at the first Grand Slam tournament since the season restarted following the coronavirus-enforced shutdown.

“I’m happy to confirm that I’ll participate at #CincyTennis and #USOpen this year,” the 33-year-old world number one tweeted.

“It was not an easy decision to make with all the obstacles and challenges on many sides, but the prospect of competing again makes me really excited,” added the 17-time Grand Slam champion.

The US Open gets underway behind closed doors in New York on Monday August 31, with Djokovic arriving in the United States on Saturday to tune up in the Western and Southern Open, which is normally played in Cincinnati but has been moved to New York this year.

His decision to take part is a major boost for the US Open after a host of headline names pulled out.

Djokovic makes his competitive return after being heavily criticized for hosting a charity tennis event in the Balkans in June at which he and a raft of players tested positive for COVID-19.

Sam Okwaraji: NFF begins process to retire Eagles No.6 jersey

The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) is pondering a move to retire the Super Eagles No.6 jersey previously worn by the late Sam Okwaraji, The PUNCH reports.

NFF President Amaju Pinnick made this known during an interview on a radio programme Sports Salsa, which was aired on Kennis 104.1 FM on Wednesday.

Okwaraji died of congestive heart failure minutes after he slumped during a 1990 World Cup qualifier between Nigeria and Angola on August 12, 1989, inside the main-bowl of the National Stadium, Lagos.

The game ended 1-0 in favour of the Eagles.

“Someone made a proposal about retiring the jersey (No.6) at the start of the year and I think it is not too much for us to do that,” Pinnick said.

“I will forward the proposal to the executive committee for implementation because it has been said already. So, we will see how we can retire that shirt in honour of a great patriot (Samuel) Okwaraji.

“His (Okwaraji) death was very tragic because he was a player who showed dexterity, professionalism and maturity each time he played for the Eagles.”
