Obama starts long awaited Africa tour at Slave Port

Almost four centuries after Africans started being shipped to North America as slaves, the first U.S. president of African ancestry will on Thursday visit an infamous embarkation point for those destined for lives in chains. In his first – and, many Africans say, long-overdue – extended tour of the continent, President Barack Obama will focus on political and economic issues, but is also paying homage to a painful chapter in American history. On the first leg of his eight-day visit he is taking his family to the House of Slaves, a fort built in the late 18th century on Goree Island, off the coast of Senegal, as a transit point for the human traffic and…

-As Anglican Church beefs up security following robbery attack on cathedral. As cases of kidnapping appear to be receding in Owerri Metropolis, bandits are shifting their notorious activities to homes, churches and their institutions. Last week, armed robbers raided Holy Rosary Hospital Emekuku, owned by the Catholic Archdiocese of Owerri, carting away cash and hospital equipment. The Administrator of the hospital, Rev. Fr. Ojimadu said while other denominations stay up to six hours in their service, no Mass in the Catholic Church lasts for more than three hours, yet many Catholics will leave before it…

Tribute To Monsignor Dr. Georg Huessler Of Caritas Fame

Only a few months into the Nigeria- Biafra war, the imbalance in the disposition of military hardware was already definitive in favour of Nigeria. U.S.S.R and Britain literally flung the gates of their armouries wide open for Nigeria to satisfy her wish-list of weapons on credit, while Biafra struggled to purchase obsolete bolt- action rifles at cut-throat black market prices. It was the peak of the cold war, the ideological conflict between the Communist East bloc (Russia and her allies) and the Capitalist West bloc (U.S and allies). To survive as a country then, you needed to belong to one bloc. Biafra belonged to none. An ideological orphan! Having denied Biafra access to weapons to…
